No Child Should Go Hungry At School

To the Honorable State of Ohio Supreme Court,
Children are never responsible for the circumstances they are born into. Many families are struggling just to keep the lights on at home. Of those families many do not qualify for the federal free or reduced cost lunch program. At $5.00 to $8.00 a day times 20 days a month, and 2-4 kids; That’s enough to make a car payment or utility payment. Students grades suffer without proper consistent nutrition, it’s hard to study with a growling belly. I believe that the people of Ohio can see and understand that too. So, Amy Rippel-Elton candidate for Congress in Ohio’s district 12 is stepping up. She’s joining with other government officials and organizations to prepare and present to you an initiative that we believe should become a referendum on the November ballot in 2023 to cover the cost of lunch for all Ohio students K-12. Would you please join with us in approving the initiative for signatures to become a referendum.
Sincerely,

Why is this important?

In middle school I washed dishes to pay for my lunch. My parent made too much money to qualify for the free lunch program, and worked so hard that she fell asleep on the couch before being able to spend quality time with me. I looked for other ways to bring in income to cover any extras such as babysitting and lawn mowing.
Today’s inner city kids are pushed toward drug selling, prostitution, and theft. I have seen it and stopped them. It’s now illegal for schools to allow children to do the lunchroom work I did as a kid. I have taken initiative when I lived in the inner city of Columbus to help these kids find legal ways to earn the money for what they wanted to buy. The one kid that stuck out in my mind the most was doing those things to get diapers and wipes for his baby sisters. A 1 to 2 cent tax on the dollar for almost any necessary disposable item would cover the cost for lunch for every child in the state. I think that’s a minor inconvenience to solve a major problem.
