Pass the Thurston Climate Mitigation Plan

Pass the Thurston Climate Mitigation Plan

Petition to City Council Members of Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater, and to Thurston County Commissioners:

The cities of Tumwater, Lacey and Olympia as well as the county have come together to create the Thurston Climate Mitigation Plan. We urge you when it comes before you to adopt and implement the plan to achieve the science-based targets you have set for reducing carbon pollution in our region.

We are mindful of the dangers that the scientists are warning us of if we do not make immediate and dramatic changes in the normal ways things are done. We are watching from afar the burning of Australia and the melting of both polar caps; closer to home we are seeing the “new normal” of heavy rains bringing flooding, of forest fires raging throughout the summers, and of warm and unhealthy waters killing our salmon. We are aware of multiple health risks including greater risk for epidemics that are posed by climate change.

While the Covid-19 pandemic has been a terrible experience, it is only a dress rehearsal, and a temporary one at that, for what is to come from the climate crisis if we don't take swift action now to turn things around. Therefore, we urge you to approve this plan and begin in this year the work of slashing our greenhouse gas emissions.

We embrace the opportunities in this plan. While we acknowledge that it means change, and that some of the change will be hard, we also see opportunities to make more livable neighborhoods, to create jobs making more energy efficient buildings and upgrades, to join an electric vehicle and clean energy revolution, preserve and create more green spaces, and more! We want you to do the hard things with our backing. Please pass and fund this plan.

Why is this important?

Scientists are warning us that if we do not make immediate and dramatic changes in the normal ways things are done, climate disruption will create an unlivable planet. We are watching from afar the burning of Australia (1 Billion dollars worth of damage) and the melting of both polar caps; closer to home we are seeing the “new normal” of heavy rains bringing flooding, of forest fires raging throughout the summers (CA last year suffered 2 Trillion dollars worth of damage from 6,782 separate fires!), and of warm and unhealthy waters threatening the extinction of our salmon and orca. We are aware of multiple health risks including greater risk for epidemics that are posed by climate change. Medical associations warn that the greatest health threat ahead of us is the climate crisis. While the Covid-19 pandemic has been a terrible experience, it is only a dress rehearsal, and a temporary one at that, for what is to come from the climate crisis if we don't take swift action now to turn things around. Sign this petition to our elected officials in this county letting them know you want them to pass and fund our climate mitigation plan.
