President Obama: Fracked Gas and Oil are not the Solution - Ban Fracking on Public Lands
Action to address climate change is desperately needed, but any real plan to combat climate change cannot include fracking for natural gas and oil as part of the solution. Drilling, fracking, and transporting gas and oil releases large amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into the air and contributes to climate change. We are asking you to stop promoting natural gas as a bridge fuel and to take action to ban fracking on all public lands. Natural gas is not clean - we need real renewable energy solutions now.
Why is this important?
On June 25, President Obama delivered a major speech on climate change. While there was much to be applauded in the speech, a centerpiece of his plan relies on increased drilling and fracking for natural gas and oil. In fact, the President repeatedly lauded "cleaner" natural gas.
Studies show that the process of drilling, fracking, processing and transporting natural gas results in a tremendous amount of methane being released into the air. Methane is 70-100 times more potent than CO2 over a 20- year time frame. Some recently published studies on methane emissions show that burning natural gas may be even worse, in terms of the overall greenhouse gas footprint, than burning coal for electricity and burning fuel oil to heat homes or run industrial boilers. We need to get off of all fossil fuels now.
This summer, the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management is accepting comments on a weak set of rules to regulate fracking on federal public lands. We need to tell them to ban fracking on public lands.
Fracking and drilling pollute our water, our air, and our communities but it also drives climate change. Tell President Obama that natural gas is a false solution and that we need to invest in real renewable energy solutions now.
