When people buy eggs from a package that claims to be free range they picture the chickens being able to forage in fields, eat bugs and worms, bask in the sunshine and take dust baths. This is not how it is at all. USDA needs to up their standards for qualifying a farm as Certified Organic and free range so consumers can actually understand if the eggs they are buying were from chickens who were treated humanely or not.
Why is this important?
Chickens packed tightly in battery cages which are stacked on top of each other to make it so the farmers get the most eggs for the most amount of money, never mind how horrible it is for the chicken itself. The chickens can barely turn around, have to fight for food and water, and defecate all over one another. Most organic free range chickens never step foot outside. They are kept in a long coop with is packed with thousands of birds and an open window, they have to fight for just some sunlight and fresh air. This is cruel and inhumane.
