  • Make 6th & San Pedro a Skid Row Climate Center Location!
"Skid Row Cooling Resources" began Fall of 2020 as a grassroots planning and advocacy effort in response to a brutal September heatwave to make sure resources like hydration and shade were provided at the street level following the summer in Skid Row. A March 31, 2021 Request for Support was well received in LA City Hall and (4) "Cooling Stations" with canopies arrived on the streets in July 2021 and remained through the start of October 2021. Each cooling station consisted of two pop-up tent canopies: one of which was the "Misting Tent" with chairs to sit in the shade, and the other had a "Water Bar" which provided cups of filtered water with ice as well as other cold snacks, and each station was managed 24/7 by Urban Alchemy workers. As a Pilot Program, these cooling stations were massively successful - especially the location on 6th & San Pedro St. Unfortunately, the funding for the following year was cut in half so the number of cooling stations for Summer 2022 was dropped to (2) locations, and the program was renamed "Climate Centers." The location at 6th & San Pedro was one of the locations cut even though the metrics showed it had served the largest number of people the year before. Advocacy efforts to get back to the original (4) locations began in early 2023. A CAO Report from the City Administrative Officer dated May 12, 2023 shows $2,492,414 budgeted for for the continuation of the program "Climate Centers (Cooling/Warming) Centers" (#16 on Page 5) in CD-14, approved by the LA City Mayor and LA City Council on June 23, 2023 for the new fiscal year, beginning July 1, 2023. • Unite Families Faster : Reform U.S Immigration foe Siblings Now!
Subject: Request for Support in Expediting Sibling Immigration Processing   Dear Honorable U.S Senator Representative I hope this message finds you well. My name is Wael Nawar, and I am writing as a concerned constituent residing in Dearborn/Michigan. I would like to bring to your attention the significant issue of the prolonged waiting times for U.S. citizens seeking to reunite with their siblings through family-based immigration. The Issue: Under current immigration law, siblings of U.S. citizens often face wait times of 15 to 20 years or more before they can join their families in the United States. This extended delay is placing a heavy emotional, financial, and social burden on families. These wait times are not in line with the humanitarian goals of family unity that the U.S. immigration system is founded upon. Why This Matters: Family unity is essential to the fabric of our society. When families are separated for such prolonged periods, it creates emotional distress and challenges that can affect both individuals and communities. By reforming the processing of sibling immigration cases, we can ensure that U.S. citizens can be reunited with their loved ones in a more reasonable timeframe, improving the overall well-being of these families. Why It Needs to Change: The current wait times for sibling immigration petitions are far too long, causing significant hardship. Families are being separated for decades, leading to emotional distress and missed opportunities. We believe that this issue can be addressed by reducing the wait times to a more reasonable range of 5 to 7 years. Such a change would reflect the values of family unity and fairness, providing families the opportunity to reunite in a more timely and just manner. What Needs to Happen: To address this issue, I respectfully urge you to support legislative reforms aimed at: 1. Reducing the waiting period for sibling immigration cases to a more reasonable timeframe of 5 to 7 years. 2. Increasing the annual cap on family-based visas for siblings to help alleviate the backlog and speed up processing times. 3. Introducing measures to expedite the application review process and make the system more efficient. Conclusion: By advocating for these changes, you will be supporting countless families across the United States who are facing the hardship of prolonged separation. I kindly request your support in bringing these issues to the forefront and ensuring that families are reunited as quickly as possible. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I look forward to your response and your commitment to reforming the sibling immigration process. Sincerely, Wael Nawar [email protected]

  • A Petition for Anti-Racism Action by Survivor Entertainment Group
The executive producers of one of the most popular and influential reality television shows in history should commit to featuring Black, Indigenous, People of Color (“BIPOC”) in their full breadth and depth. SURVIVOR should reflect and honor the racial diversity of our society--both in front of and behind the camera. With this petition, we call on the executive producers of this show to use their influence within ViacomCBS, MGM Television, Survivor Production LLC, Castaway Production LLC and all others involved in the making of this great show and take the following actions to combat systemic racism: 1. Cast BIPOC for at least 30% of contestants each season hereafter. 2. Give BIPOC equitable screen time and opportunities to participate in marketing and promotional events (e.g., finale invitations, hosting jobs). 3. Actively support BIPOC cast, including providing mental health resources specifically geared to helping them navigate the Survivor experience as BIPOC. 4. Equitably compensate and hire more BIPOC in all parts of production: casting, filming, editing, and promoting. 5. Publicly pledge to vet contestants more thoroughly to ensure those who have promoted prejudices (e.g., ableism, racism, sexism, white supremacy, religious intolerance, homophobia, transphobia) are not cast. 6. Condemn racist abuse directed towards BIPOC contestants, announce and enforce a “zero tolerance” policy towards racism. 7. Commit to providing resources to help viewers learn more about BIPOC stories and organizations supporting BIPOC causes. 8. Feature BIPOC contestants, including their experiences as BIPOC, on the show as storylines, should the contestants share them in the context of their game. 9. Ensure that cultural elements of the experiences of BIPOC are not exploited and their portrayal does not perpetuate harmful stereotypes. 10. Issue a public statement acknowledging systemic racism within the franchise and offer a clear plan for demonstrable anti-racism efforts moving forward. In signing this petition I also agree to hold myself to the same standard. I pledge to commit to anti-racism in how I consume and interact with the Survivor franchise. By signing this petition, I promise to: 1. Show zero tolerance for racism--online, offline, everywhere. 2. Support BIPOC contestants by speaking up when I perceive they are being treated unfairly due to their racial identity by Survivor, fellow castmates, or viewers. 3. Listen thoughtfully to BIPOC contestants about their experiences and their suggestions for how to best support them. 4. Appreciate that producers, in part, base their decisions on our feedback and whom we choose to support. 5. Recognize that anti-racism is an ongoing effort that requires continuous self-education and action.

  • House GOP refuses to renew election security funding as Democrats fume over Russian interference
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/house-gop-refuses-to-renew-election-security-funding-as-democrats-fume-over-russian-meddling/2018/07/18/20761f88-8abb-11e8-8aea-86e88ae760d8_story.html?utm_term=.d4f68c9b213b I can't believe that you would vote against this just because it's a Democrat offer for election security. What are you thinking? Why is this so wrong from your standpoint? We already know that there is three possible Congressional members, one being, Senator Claire McCaskill. Is it because she is a Democrat that you voted against this? Is it because there is no possible threat, and this is "fake news" (https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/7/26/17619818/russia-claire-mccaskill-2018-midterm-hack)? Do you not care about the upcoming midterm election? You know what "they" say....Karma has its way of biting us. I am sorry that you aren't willing to stand on your own feet and tell the rest of your Congress....I don't go along with this!

  • Governor Cuomo: Respect Public Ed and What #AllKidsNeed
Governor Cuomo has proposed a misguided, billionaire agenda for our public schools – focused on testing, privatization and unfair funding. It is becoming increasingly clear that he is intent on significantly diminishing the local, democratic control that has been the foundation of our public school system. Our focus must be on providing what students need and ensuring every child has a quality public school. As your constituent, I demand that you act to reverse course and institute education standards and proven policies that are in the best interest of all students and communities. We call on Gov. Cuomo and our legislators to visit our schools to learn what our kids need — from the people who know each child by name.

  • Tell your representative to give bees a chance!
I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 2692, the Save America's Pollinators Act, which would suspend the use of toxic, bee-killing pesticides until a full review of scientific evidence indicates they are safe and a field study demonstrates they do no harm to bees and other pollinators. Around the world, bees are dying at alarming rates. In June, 50,000 bumble bees were killed in a Target parking lot after neonic pesticides were sprayed on nearby trees -- the largest bumble bee die-off ever recorded. Then, in July, 37 million honey bees died on a single farm in Ontario. These key pollinators need our help. Without immediate action to save bees, which pollinate two-thirds of our food crops, everything from almonds to strawberries could disappear from supermarket shelves. In the last decade the phenomenon of Colony Collapse Disorder has resulted in a sharp decline in honey bee populations around the world. A growing body of scientific evidence points to the widespread and indiscriminate use of a class of neurotoxic pesticides called neonicotinoids as a key factor in this phenomenon. Neonicotinoids are now the most widely used insecticides in the world and their use has been repeatedly shown to have lethal and sub-lethal effects on bees, other pollinators and beneficial insects. The EU has banned these pesticides but the EPA has delayed action until 2018. The bees can’t wait, and neither can we. Congress must take immediate action to protect bees. Please help protect bees and other important pollinators by co-sponsoring H.R. 2692, the Save America's Pollinators Act.
