A Choice and a Voice for Monongalia County Back-to-SchoolDear Monongalia County Board of Education members, In a July 17 interview on WAJR, Superintendent Eddie Campbell pledged: “Mon County schools reopening will be a team effort with families.” So far, families and teachers feel unheard, unconsidered, and unimportant in this process, though it affects them profoundly. We ask our school board members, elected by us, to represent us with the following requests to the administration: 1) A remote choice for our families that includes instruction from local teachers. 2) A remote choice for our teachers, if they have families of their own in the school system or are at risk themselves. 3) A follow-up survey sent to all families, with a clear choice between two options only: (a) in-person learning (regardless of how many days per week) vs. (b) remote learning from local teachers. 4) A survey sent to teachers, to gauge their preference for (a) teaching in class vs. (b) teaching remotely. 5) A clear method for asking questions or otherwise being in dialog with the board and the administration during this difficult time, to allow for transparency in the process (e.g.: regular zoom Q+A sessions; socially-distant open-air forums; open zoom board meetings with the possibility of being on the schedule to be heard; etc). Thank you. Respectfully submitted, All signed petitioners472 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Mon Cty Parents

Equitable Access to Rental HousingAs representatives of and advocates for people with criminal records, the signatories of this petition demand the Charlotte City Council to draft and enact a local ordinance that insures the following: 1. A regulation that shall require rental housing providers to defer any inquiry into criminal convictions of applicants and their household members until after the applicant is qualified. 2. A regulation that shall require rental housing providers who deny an applicant based on their criminal history, to allow the applicant to provide evidence of rehabilitation and/or other mitigating factors related to convictions that would show they are a good candidate despite their criminal record. 3. A regulation that guarantees the right of a rental applicant to file a complaint if they believe they have been discriminated against because of their criminal record. 4. The creation of an administering body to investigate and enforce all renter complaints related to the regulations in the ordinance. 5. A regulation that shall direct rental housing providers to post and/or list in writing a description of those matters identified by the ordinance that may be considered by the landlord as basis for adverse action, including criminal convictions and years since conviction date. The above ordinance shall apply to all rental housing providers receiving city funding for development, capital improvement, leased or transfer of land or real property, tax deferments, financial incentives and/or any other favorable monetary considerations.652 of 800 SignaturesCreated by Reentry Housing Alliance

Keep universal masking in place in Hamden Public SchoolsWe write to request that the Hamden School District maintain universal masking for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year. To date, Hamden has kept students, educators, families, and the broader community safe by following recommendations from the CDC and local health agencies like the Quinnipiac Valley Health District (QVHD) to create school COVID-19 policies. The CDC’s January 2022 guidance specifically recommends universal indoor masking by all students (ages 2 years and older), staff, teachers, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. The American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) reinforced the CDC’s guidance, recommending vaccination for children over 5 and universal masking as two critical strategies to be used in tandem to ensure the safety of ALL children, including those especially vulnerable to infection. Furthermore, a January 2022 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) demonstrated that masking was associated with reduced school closures, which in turn resulted in adverse health symptoms such as distress and anxiety for students. We are all tired, but let’s hold on a little longer until we have established that we can keep our communities safe without requiring masks. Thank you for your consideration and for all you do to keep our children safe.417 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Madeline Ravich

NO ORV use in JORDAN RIVER VALLEY- Keep it WildOff-road vehicles (ORVs) and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) can have several negative impacts on natural and scenic watershed regions, including those in northern Michigan: 1. Soil Erosion and Compaction: The use of ORVs and ATVs can lead to soil erosion and compaction. This disrupts the natural soil structure, making it difficult for plants to grow and increasing the risk of erosion. 2. Water Quality Degradation: These vehicles can cause sedimentation in waterways, which can degrade water quality. Increased sediment can harm aquatic habitats and reduce the clarity of the water. 3. Habitat Destruction: The creation of unplanned trails and roads can fragment habitats, disrupt wildlife, and lead to the destruction of sensitive ecosystems such as wetlands and meadows34. 4. Pollution: Inefficient combustion of gasoline and motor oil from these vehicles can lead to the contamination of soil and water with pollutants. 5. Vegetation Damage: ORVs and ATVs can damage vegetation, especially in sensitive areas like bogs and meadows. This can take years to recover from even minimal use. These impacts highlight the importance of managing and regulating the use of ORVs and ATVs in natural areas to protect the environment and maintain the scenic beauty of regions like northern Michigan. The next meeting is September 9, 2024 7pm at Chestonia TWP.2,162 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Brian Kozminski

Proposed CA Legislation for Third Degree Murder for Police Negligence of Citizens in CustodyAddress police negligence by increasing the penalties for the death of US Citizens in custody by adding a "Third Degree Murder" option to the California Penal Code. I have drafted the following language for your consideration: California Penal Code PENAL CODE - PEN PART 1. OF CRIMES AND PUNISHMENTS [25 - 680.4] ( Part 1 enacted 1872. ) TITLE 8. OF CRIMES AGAINST THE PERSON [187 - 248] ( Title 8 enacted 1872. ) CHAPTER 1. Homicide [187 - 199] ( Chapter 1 enacted 1872. ) 189 (b) All other kinds of murders are of the second degree unless committed by a peace officer or his designee during time of detainment, citing third degree murder 189.2 MURDER IN THE THIRD DEGREE. All murder that occurs while the victim is in custody of a peace officer and detained, causes the death of that citizen by perpetrating an act eminently dangerous to the victim, without regard for human life, is guilty of murder in the third degree and may be sentenced to imprisonment for a minimum of 5 years and not more than 25 years. As an example: A California peace officer detains a US Citizen and has them in custody. The officer then proceeds to restrain that person in custody in a manner that acts without regard to that citizen’s life, and as a direct result that citizen is killed.1,046 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Nathaniel Atherstone

Ban Horse Slaughter Now!We ask that the House of Representatives, Senate, and President Obama pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011, S.B. 1176/H.R. 2966, to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. This is particularly important for the following reasons: 1) Horses are revered for their contributions to the building of this country, their long-standing history of working alongside humans in a variety of tasks, their companionship, and their special bond with people; (2) Horses are not raised for the purpose of being slaughtered for human consumption, and, as a result, American horses are not raised, fed, and medicated within the FDA guidelines established for food animals, making them potentially unfit and unsafe for human consumption; (3) Horse slaughter is not humane euthanasia and does not allow for each animal to be respectfully treated as an individual; (4) Banning slaughter would encourage breeders to be more careful in the number of foals they produce, and it ultimately would reduce the number of horses in need, while improving horse welfare; (5) President Obama made a campaign promise to permanently ban horse slaughter and exports of horses for human consumption; and (6) Allowing commercial horse slaughter for human consumption in the U.S. uses American tax dollars to support an industry that caters entirely to foreign interests, instead of directing those tax dollars to domestic interests.20,864 of 25,000 SignaturesCreated by Kristen Tregar
