Celgene is a business leader in New Jersey and a leader in the pharmaceutical industry with the noble goal of “advancing the cause of human health.” This makes Celgene’s membership in the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) so perplexing. ALEC, the state policy membership organization, creates model bills using a process where corporate lobbyists and special interests vote as equals with legislators. Because ALEC policy is no good for New Jersey’s residents, we’re asking you to end your ALEC membership by the end of 2012. Be a leader in corporate citizenship, and take a stand with the people of the state that you call home! ALEC also promotes bills and resolutions across the country that • Would defund public healthcare services for those who need it most through model bills that come from the Health and Human Services Task Force, on which Celgene sits; • Make it harder for students, minorities, and the poor to vote; • Are similar to Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” laws; • Advocate for the privatization of public services including schools; • Oppose efforts to require pay equity or paycheck fairness between men and women; • Deny climate change and urges states to withdraw from regional initiatives designed to address climate change; and • Undermine workers’ standard of living by banning living wage ordinances and opposing increases in the minimum wage. Already these New Jersey-based companies have renounced their ALEC membership this year: Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Express Scripts/Medco and Reckitt Benckiser Group. Department of Defense assault on Freedom of Information Act. Undersigned citizens request that our representatives not allow the Department of Defense to water-down the Freedom of Information Act by putting a provision into the Defense Authorization Act of 2012 that would prevent the public from accessing information having to do with Emergency Response and safety concerns effecting communities adjacent to Federal Facilities. The Department of Defense is seeking a new exemption to the Freedom of Information Act to withhold records related to military infrastructure. The Senate version of the bill would allow a “senior Department of Defense civilian” to withhold records by issuing only a “statement of the basis for the determination.” This new proposed exemption is a radical change for the Freedom of Information Act and will limit citizens’ ability to learn of hazardous military activities in their communities. The Department of Defense has laws and exemptions to the Freedom of Information Act already in place to prevent the release of sensitive or classified information. This new legislation is the Department of Defense response to a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Milner v. Navy. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Milner as the Navy could not use the exemption put forward and that the community had a right to know the risk to their community. The public has a right to know about explosives, harmful chemicals and emergency response plans for military bases. Section 1044 would allow the Department of Defense to withhold records essential for Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) requirements. The Department of Defense is not exempt from these regulations. We desperately need a no-kill animal shelter in our City. You can help make this happen. Sign this petition to encourage Santa Clarita Council Members to build an animal shelter, right here within the City of Santa Clarita. Santa Clarita has over 211,000 residents, but we do not have a City animal shelter. There is only one LA County animal shelter in our area, and it is in Castaic. It is small, with only one row of dog kennels. People are regularly asked by the shelter to house found animals. Also, County shelters are currently sheltering no adult stray or feral cats. Sadly, the average euthanasia rate for all seven LA County Animal Care Centers so far this fiscal year is 26%. Tragically, the euthanasia rate for Castaic Animal Care Center is 31%. The Castaic shelter has euthanatized more animals this year than the other County shelters in Downey, Carson, Baldwin Park, Lancaster, Agoura and Pamdale. Within the City of Santa Clarita there are many soccer fields, baseball and softball fields, community centers, auditoriums, hiking trails, and recreation centers. We have a new large, beautiful senior center, a new Downtown Newhall theater and parking structure, and a new City-owned ice skating rink but there is no city animal shelter. It only takes a minute for you to help save and protect our local homeless animals. Hillary Clinton is expected to leave New Hampshire with just as many delegates as Bernie Sanders, even after he crushed her in Tuesday’s presidential primary. Clinton won nine delegates in the primary but came into the contest with the support of six superdelegates, who are state party insiders given the freedom to support any candidate they choose. The Clinton campaign has secured about 360 superdelegates across the country. . Sanders has a total of eight superdelegates.

I urge you to block the proposed merger between Bayer and Monsanto. This deal would create a new corporate giant in an already consolidated market for seeds and agricultural chemicals, leaving farmers and consumers with fewer options and higher prices. Just a few companies already have too much power over the basic building blocks of our food system. 
Please block this deal to prevent further corporate control of our food.
