  • Tell TIAA to go deforestation-free!
Dear Mr. Ferguson, TIAA is among the top U.S. shareholders in big global palm oil traders and growers -- companies whose business model is fundamentally unsustainable because it thrives on forest destruction and depends on land grabs from small farmers to make way for plantations run with dangerous, dirty, low wage or no-wage labor. This destruction makes palm oil production among the leading causes of tropical deforestation. Palm oil is unsustainable for the planet and it is unsustainable for our investments! The Carbon Disclosure Project’s 2017 Global Forest Report notes that up to US$941 billion of turnover in publicly-listed companies is dependent on commodities linked to deforestation, including palm oil, soy, cattle, and timber, and urges investors to adopt policies to address the material risks related to deforestation in their portfolios. TIAA has not addressed what it is doing regarding the material ESG risks related to deforestation and land governance. As one of the largest investment firms in the U.S., TIAA should be investing responsibly -– across all its portfolios! We are demanding TIAA go deforestation and land grab-free! Sincerely,

  • Ban Plastic Bottles, Utensils & Straws from SMC Campus
Ban the sale and use of plastic beverage bottles and straws on SMC Campus Facilities to reflect environmental sustainable values. Plastic is the No. 1 threat to marine ecosystems. Bottled packaging plants negatively affect public health, annual purchases of bottled water are 2000 times more expensive than using tap water. On top of that, tap water has significantly lower rates of potentially damaging substances.

  • Senators Without a Moral Compass Vote for Tax Bill
Your hypocrisy in supporting this so called "tax reform bill" is in stark contrast to principled stands in the face of repeated attempts to gut the Affordable Care Act. Summon some courage and vote no on the final version of this bill.

  • Oregon Strategic Climate Change Plan
We request that the State Legislature convene a Special Session to draft a comprehensive Strategic Climate Change Plan for the State of Oregon in response to dramatic and continuing climate change. This plan needs to address the long-term impacts of droughts, flooding, wild fires and other extreme weather conditions on public safety and the state economy. It should take advantage of public-private partnerships to assist in drafting and implementing the plan. The plan should incorporate appropriate guidelines and standards already developed by the Georgetown Climate Center, the Oregon Climate Research Institute and Oregon state agencies .
