  • Gov. Cuomo: Convene special session to enact legislation that has been bottled up by Republican c...
Now is the time to pass the NYS Dream Act, raise the minimum wage and enact all the other policies that have been stymied or watered down since the IDC, a breakaway group of Democratic state senators, has voted to give the Republicans a majority. They have promised to come back to the fold but talk is cheap and promises are cheaper (as Republican leader Dean Skelos all but said).

  • President Obama: Don't take our Social Security money!
Social Security funds are not up for grabs. If you want to reduce the debt, take the money from wasteful military projects, NOT from our retirement savings.

  • Rhode Island: lagging on solar
Too much of our energy comes from dirty fossil fuels that pollute our air and contribute to global warming. Luckily, the sun gives us the resources we need to create jobs and supply pollution-free energy right here on our own rooftops. I urge you to set bold long-term goals for solar energy in Rhode Island, and to pursue plans and policies that incentivize solar production, lower barriers to installation, and require more renewable energy in Rhode Island's energy mix.

  • Support the Putnam County Legislature Against the NY SAFE Act
PETITION IN SUPPORT OF THE PUTNAM COUNTY LEGISLATURE’S RESOLUTION IN OPPOSITION TO THE NY SECURE AMMUNITION AND FIREARMS ENFORCEMENT ACT OF 2013 WHEREAS the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013 (“NY SAFE Act”) was rushed to passage by the State Legislature and the Governor without any debate or opportunity for input from the People of the State of New York; and WHEREAS the NY SAFE Act: 1) is greatly detrimental to the civil liberties of law-abiding citizens by criminalizing Constitutionally protected rights, imposing burdensome and ambiguous regulations, and depriving the People of ownership, use and free transfer of their property; 2) adversely affects commerce within the State and between the States; and 3) is ineffective in preventing violent crimes or mitigating their severity; and WHEREAS the NY SAFE Act places undue burdens upon each county regarding license recertification, public records exemption forms, mental health recordkeeping, and other requirements that constitute unfunded mandates and require increased staffing, which burdens directly and adversely affect county taxpayers; THEREFORE, WE THE UNDERSIGNED, express our full support and gratitude to the Putnam County Legislature for its Resolution #45 passed on February 2, 2013, which expressed opposition to the NY SAFE Act, and we call upon the Putnam County Legislature and Putnam County Executive to continue all efforts to oppose and repeal the NY SAFE Act and mitigate its burdens on taxpayers.

  • The Feds Should Run the State of Michigan
Rick Snyder has taken away the power of several elected officials in his state, in effect taking away the local representation their residents voted for. Even after the original emergency manager law was overturned, they just passed a new one. This can't be constitutional. But if it is, then why not take the law to it's logical conclusion. If the State of Michigan has so many cities in such bad shape, such that the governor can usurp the power of his cities' mayors, then why can't the Feds usurp HIS power as a governor? Either this law should be declared unconstitutional, or the Federal Government should step in to run the entire state.

  • NYU faculty and students call for justice in Abu Dhabi
The government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is currently prosecuting nearly 100 individuals, including human-rights lawyers, judges, teachers, and student activists, in Abu Dhabi for allegedly attempting to overthrow the government of the UAE. We the undersigned are faculty, staff, students, and alumni of New York University (NYU) who take a special interest in the rights of free speech, intellectual freedom, and political dissent in the UAE because of the presence of an NYU branch campus in that country (NYU Abu Dhabi). We call for the immediate release of all prisoners who have merely spoken out about the undemocratic character of the UAE government or who have assembled together peacefully. The defendants should also have full access to their lawyers and family members, an opportunity to see the evidence that is being used against them, the right to cross-examine witnesses, and the right to appeal any verdict in this case. The trial or trials of these individuals should be open to human-rights observers and the press, both foreign and domestic. Finally, we ask for an independent investigation into the defendants' allegations of ill treatment during their detention.
