Tell Airbnb: Get anti-vaccine hosts off platform

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky needs to take action to stop the spread of anti-vaccine misinformation on the Airbnb platform by banning anti-vaxxer hosts who demand guests be unvaccinated. After a story broke in May of a host who wouldn’t allow vaccinated guests, citing a conspiracy theory, Chesky vowed to take steps to stem the spread of COVID-19 misinformation. But as recently as July 19, Airbnb was still allowing anti-vaxxers to rent out space only to unvaccinated guests.

Why is this important?

Airbnb has joined other digital platforms in allowing COVID-19 misinformation to spread without an effective plan to stop it. Months ago, after a guest exposed a cabin rental listing in Montana which had a “no vaccinated guests” policy, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky vowed to take action to stop hosts from posting conspiracy theories and myths that could endanger public health.¹

Since then, amid a 52% increase in bookings on Airbnb due to the slowing of the pandemic, Chesky has done little to stop hosts from spreading dangerous COVID-19 misinformation.² He’s chosen a path similar to other large platforms like Twitter and Facebook, both of which have taken fairly slow steps to suspend accounts that actively spread misinformation about COVID-19.

People in the U.S. are traveling again because of the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the vast majority — close to 99% — of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. are of unvaccinated people.³ And, as the highly contagious Delta variant spark a new outbreak, the head of the CDC warns that “this is becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated.”⁴

The last thing we need is for Airbnb, the world’s largest accommodations provider,⁵ to give anti-vaxxer hosts a platform. They are putting our public health in danger. Airbnb needs to tighten up their platform rules and immediately remove misinformation about the vaccine — and the hosts who believe conspiracy theories and misinformation that contribute to the spread of COVID-19.

Sign the petition to let Brian Chesky know that he must immediately locate and remove hosts who spew anti-vaccine conspiracies.
