To: U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

Be pastoral, not partisan

Be pastoral, not partisan

The Eucharist is the central, unifying ritual of the Catholic church — a sacrament that is meant to bring us into communion with one another. Using it as a tool for political intimidation betrays its power and its purpose. In a country and church already riven with hostility and brokenness, the bishops chose to be partisan instead of pastoral, cruel rather than Christ-like. They chose to ignore Jesus’ command to “feed one another,” despite the fact that a significant majority of U.S. Catholics oppose withholding Communion and other Sacraments from supporters of abortion rights. Join fellow Catholics in telling the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to stop weaponizing the Eucharist. Call on them to bring healing and unity to our church and our country, not harm and divisiveness.

Why is this important?

As Catholics, we know that religious leaders cannot separate us from the love of God, and we will not let them abuse their power to score political points with the right wing.

How it will be delivered

We plan to send the petition to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops after their fall meeting.

Reasons for signing

  • Like Pope Francis has said before..."it is not my job to judge"so the Bishops shouldn't neither.
  • Because the decision is a private matter and should not be part of the catechism, should not be weaponized to suppress women's rights, and certainly should not be weaponized to excommunicate or restrict access to the Holy Eucharist. The Church has a double-standard on pro-life: Not OK if you are woman seeking an abortion, but perfectly OK for a state to sanction murder of prisoners via the death penalty.
  • Judge not, lest you also be judged. Eucharist is for all of we sinners, not a reward for saints. Jesus said, This is my body and blood. Take and eat and drink!
