Tell ICE to Keep Salma Home!Salma arrived in the US from Bangladesh in 1999 and has not left since. She’s a crew member at a McDonald’s near her home and has dutifully checked into INS/ICE for many years- always having her work permit approved and getting told she “is not a priority.” This year, ICE told her to buy a one-way plane ticket to Bangladesh and leave the US by August 23rd. Just like so many hardworking immigrants who have followed the rules for 10, 20, and sometimes 30 years, Homeland Security’s arbitrary decision to separate this kind and loving family came as a complete shock. At a routine check-in on muggy day at the end of July, Homeland Security put a large black electronic monitoring device on Salma's ankle and told her to check in two times a week for the next 4 weeks. And then fly to a country she has not seen in 18 years, leaving her loving husband and college son behind. Salma has 2 pending immigration matters, including a court hearing scheduled for July 15, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. There is no compelling reason to break up Salma's family. It's unnecessary. It’s cruel. It’s un-American. Stand with Salma and her family and stop this cruel family separation at the hands of the Department of Homeland Security. Tell ICE- STOP SEPARATING FAMILIES! Enough is enough! Bring Bakhodir Home!Bakhodir Madjitov, a Connecticut father of 3 young boys, had been living in the US for 11 years when ICE raided his home in the early morning hours of December 22, 2017. He’s been in custody ever since. His children are suffering – and we’re concerned that he may be deported soon. Bakhodir’s wife Madina was 39 weeks pregnant with a complicated pregnancy when ICE entered their home without a warrant 2 years ago. Bakhodir and Madina’s third child was born a week after ICE detained his father. Prior to being detained, Bakhodir supported his family as a home health aide working with a government issued ID. In the last 2 years, ICE has moved Bakhodir around the country in detention centers in Massachusetts, Alabama, New Jersey, and Louisiana. Madina and her lawyers are concerned that ICE might be planning to deport Bakhodir- even though he has an active case pending. Connecticut values families. We want Madina and Bakhodir and the boys together. Join us in telling ICE that Bakhodir should be home with his wife and sons!25,298 of 30,000 SignaturesCreated by Charla Nich

Stop the deportation of Nury Chavarria, mother of four, church member, and sole supporter of 4 ch...UPDATE: Nury's request for a stay has been DENIED. She was scheduled to leave her 4 children on Thursday, July 20th. This would have meant she could not enter the US for 10 years. Instead, Nury has chosen to take sanctuary in a church in New Haven. We're contininuing to support the children through a GoFundMe page, as Nury Chavarria is now considered a fugitive and cannot financially support her children. But, she can hug them. She's a mom. Nury is not a criminal- she's a law abiding mother whose children need her. She fled the violence of Guatemala in 1993 seeking asylum in the US. She is a working mother who has complied with ICE requests for 24 years. There is NO COMPELLING reason to deport a young mother with dependent US children. Help us stop this inhumane treatment of our neighbors. This petition is sponsored by CT Shoreline Indivisible.10,697 of 15,000 SignaturesCreated by Charla Nich

Stop the deportation of Luis Barrios, father of four, for a broken taillight**UPDATE: Thanks to the power of people like you, Luis Barrios got news that ICE had agreed to put his deportation on hold for 2 years as of May 12th. VICTORY!!** Here's the petition~ Luis Barrios, 52, is a homeowner who lives in Derby, Connecticut, with his four children. He was pulled over for having a broken tail light in 2011, which brought him in contact with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Luis has never been arrested and has no criminal record. Luis has held a steady job. Luis has a family. Luis should not be deported. Luis was told to self deport by May 4th, or he would be taken into custody. Largely due to the groundswell of support from activists, petitioners, and the 3 members of Congress, ICE granted a 30 day stay to Luis Barrios on May 3rd - hours before he was to board a plane. Luis now faces self-deportation on June 3rd. According to Luis's daughter, her father is in danger in his country of origin, Guatemala, from which he fled more than 25 years ago. Luis's brother was murdered in Guatemala, and Luis fears what will happen if he is forced to return. His attorney says that he did seek asylum in the '90s, but an address mix-up led him to miss a court date, and his request was removed. Her hope is that the Department of Homeland Security will stop the deportation order and reconsider Luis’s case for asylum. Representative Rosa DeLauro, who represents the district where Luis and his family live, wrote a letter of support for Luis. Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal wrote a joint letter and have made public statements in support of Luis. Now it's up to us. Stand with Luis and his family and stop this unjust deportation.36,129 of 40,000 SignaturesCreated by Charla Nich

Bring Joel Colindres Home!**UPDATE: The "Department of Homeland Security" deported Joel Colindres on Wednesday, January 31st. Please sign in hopes to reunite Joel with his family, safely here in the US. Joel is not a criminal. Joel is/was a hardworking, taxpaying father of 2 small children. He is/was the kindergarten soccer coach, the favorite son-in-law of his combat wounded veteran father in law. Joel never posed a threat to anyone. He has no criminal record. Joel fled violence and death threats in Guatemala in 2004. He sought asylum in the USA. Because of a clerical error, Joel's court date notification was mailed to the wrong address in the wrong state. Joel never received that notification- which set his life course in motion. Joel is happily married to a US citizen and has an approved I-130 and Visa sponsorship thru his wife. Rather than hear his asylum case or allow him to finish the Green Card process through his valid marriage, the "Department of Homeland Security" forced him to take a one way nonstop flight to Guatemala, the very place he fled. Please follow Joel's family's struggle on the Facebook page "Save Joel Colindres." ICE has made the cruel decision to break this family- but they're going to fight to keep it together. They will continue to fight for justice for Joel!27,319 of 30,000 SignaturesCreated by Charla Nich

Tell ICE to grant Nelson Pinos a stay so he may return HOME to his family!Nelson arrived in the US from Ecuador in 1992 and has not left since. He’s a hardworking family man and has dutifully checked into INS/ICE for many years- always having his work permit approved and getting told he “is not a priority for deportation” since he has no criminal record. At a routine check-in on a chilly day last October, Homeland Security put a large black electronic monitoring device on Nelson's ankle and told him to fly to a country he has not seen in 26 years, leaving his loving partner and 3 minor kids behind. Nelson could not leave his family and so he sought refuge. He has been living in the pastor’s office at First and Summerfield United Methodists Church, located on the New Haven green, ever since. Homeland Security’s arbitrary decision to separate this kind and loving family is another example of family separation happening in our local communities, in addition to family separation at the border. There is no compelling reason to break up Nelson’s family. It's unnecessary. It’s cruel. Nelson’s children have suffered tremendously the past year. He’s missed apple picking, fishing outings, hikes, parent/teacher nights, Easter, and Christmas. Nelson’s oldest daughter turned 16 without her dad home- and little Brandon turned 6. Arlly, who turned 13, finds it hard to concentrate on her schoolwork. Kelly has nightmares and Brandon continues to ask why his father can’t return home, as he tries to understand why this happening to his family as best he can. Every day that Nelson remains in sanctuary and away from his family, is another day of trauma for them all. It’s time to end this cruel family separation at the hands of the Department of Homeland Security. It’s time to demand that ICE allow Nelson OUT OF SANCTUARY so he can take care of his family while his lawyers continue to pursue his path to legal status. ICE has the discretion to grant Nelson a stay of removal and we are asking that they recognize and END the harm and trauma being inflicted on this family. Tell ICE- STOP SEPARATING FAMILIES! Enough is enough! Charla Nich & Gini King, Vanesa Suarez, Terra Martin-Volpe CT Shoreline Indivisible, Unidad Latina en Accion, Action Together CT9,234 of 10,000 SignaturesCreated by Charla Nich

Keep Nelson Santos Home**UPDATE** Thursday, June 14th Nelson received a 6 month stay of deportation this afternoon. This good news means that we can continue to fight to keep Nelson home! The bad news is the transplant surgeons will not give Nelson his new kidney unless he can guarantee to be home for one year of post operative care. The fight to keep Nelson home so he can get his life saving surgery (and live his life with his wife and children) continues! #KeepFamiliesTogether! The brief history: Nelson has lived in the Stamford, Connecticut for 30 years and is married to a U.S. citizen. He is a dad and a homeowner. Nelson’s wife Patricia successfully petitioned for him to stay in the US, but an ICE judge ignored the USCIS recommendation to approve his green card and wants him deported. In what seems like a never-ending downpour of anti-immigrant, anti-family sentiments and actions at the hands our government, this is yet another show of the inhumanity and callousness of ICE. Nelson’s deportation order is a de facto death sentence. If he returns to Honduras, he will die. He gets dialysis in his home town 3 to 4 times a week- and this is what is keeping him alive until his transplant. Join us in speaking up for Nelson. Please sign this petition and share it with 3 friends. Thank you. URGENT: Stop the deportation of Miriam Martinez-Lemus, mother of 2, one with insulin dependent di...Miriam Martinez-Lemus has lived in Connecticut for over 25 years with intermittent ICE check-ins. She has 2 minor daughters, one of whom needs constant monitoring to keep her insulin levels in check. Miriam was scheduled to be deported Monday, November 20th at 3 pm. Instead of boarding a one-way flight to Guatemala as ICE instructed her to, Miriam went home, saying publicly “I cannot leave my child. I cannot take her to Guatemala- there is no medicine for her. I must be by her side." One of Miriam’s daughters has insulin dependent type I juvenile diabetes. On a good day, her daughter's blood sugar levels are sustained with an insulin pump and only need to be checked every 2 hours- including while she sleeps. Most other days since she was diagnosed with this life-threatening disease 2 years ago, her daughter has fluctuations in blood sugar levels and ketones that require a cocktail of insulin injections and closer monitoring to prevent a seizure or worse. Miriam is the primary caretaker for her daughter, but part of a team that includes her husband Raphael and the good doctors at Yale New Haven Hospital's Children's Pediatric Endocrinology Department. All are concerned that taking Miriam away from her US citizen daughter might trigger a diabetic reaction. Miriam is home with her daughter today - defying ICE. But ICE now considers her a fugitive and could take her in to custody. The faith leaders in Connecticut have spoken out in support of Miriam. Her mayor, state representative, state senator, governor, US congressperson, and both US senators are outraged that a kind and loving woman with a medically needy child would be deported. They’ve called this cruel and inhumane. Please tell Congress and ICE that Miriam should NOT BE DEPORTED. We value Miriam and her family needs her to survive.9,896 of 10,000 SignaturesCreated by Charla Nich

Keep Nelly Home!**UPDATE: The "Department of Homeland Security" has changed Nelly's deportation date to February 28th. After informing Nelly on February 9th that she had been granted a stay- which would have allowed her to have her case heard in court, the "Department of Homeland Security" reversed it's decision and 4 days later gave a new deportation day. The Department of Homeland Security is at it again. Nelly Cumbicos has never had a chance to have her case heard by Immigration. Nelly and her family just want her to have her day in court. Nelly’s story, like so many immigrant stories, is part of what makes America resilient and strong. She fled Ecuador in 2000 under death threats and was captured and kidnapped by bandits, who then had an automobile accident with a car full of immigrants in the US. ICE sent Nelly to join her family in Connecticut with a promise to be in touch with her. Nelly had no more contact with ICE until 2015 when she applied for citizenship. In 2018, Nelly was given a deportation date. Nelly is not a criminal. She’s our neighbor. She’s our friend. She is a kind and proud mother of a 15-year-old honor student. And Nelly is absolutely no threat to national security. According to her friends, Nelly warms your heart with her smile and charisma. Her love is endless for her neighbors, friends, and family. Nelly is the first one to volunteer for cleaning duties at her church and provides food for Sunday service to nourish the members of her community. Tell ICE and the Department of Homeland Security to stop destroying families!15,475 of 20,000 SignaturesCreated by Charla Nich
