Include a talking filibuster in any package of Senate rules reformsBetween now and January 22, Senate leaders will meet to discuss whether senators will continue to be allowed to silently stall any nomination or legislation, or whether the public accountability of a real, talking filibuster will be required from now on. During these meetings, the grassroots need a way to send a message about our frustration with unaccountable obstructionism directly to Senate leaders. At Daily Kos, by teaming up with the champions of the filibuster reform movement inside the Senate—Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Tom Udall (D-NM) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)—we have a way you can do exactly that. Tell Senate leaders to include a real, talking filibuster in any package of Senate rules reforms. Sens. Merkley, Udall and Warren will deliver your message.12,304 of 15,000 SignaturesCreated by Chris Bowers

Sign the petition to the feds: Stop militarizing our policeIf the photographs emerging from Ferguson, Missouri look like some foreign war zone to you, you're not alone. Plenty of former soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan are saying the same thing. This was no accident. The armored vehicles, assault weapons and body armor that police are wearing in Ferguson—and other state/local police across the country—come from the United States military. Since 1996, the Department of Defense has transferred $4.3 billion in military equipment to local and state police through its 1033 program. Since 2001, the Department of Homeland Security has further militarized our police through federal funds for “terrorism prevention.” It is time for this to stop. Sign the petition to President Barack Obama, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Homeland Security Secretary Johnson: stop sending military equipment to local and state police.6,602 of 7,000 SignaturesCreated by Paul Hogarth

Sign the petition: Confirm President Obama’s judicial nominees nowThere’s no two ways about it—we lost. Republicans are going to have a clear majority in the Senate next year and Mitch McConnell has already made clear that he’s going to grind President Obama’s judicial and executive nominees to a halt. But here’s the thing: Democrats still have the majority right now and they can confirm a slew of Obama’s nominees in a lame duck session. Confirming the president’s judicial nominees could be Harry Reid and Senate Democrats’ lasting legacy—and it could shape jurisprudence for decades to come. Sign the petition to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: Confirm all of President Obama’s judicial nominees right now, before it’s too late.11,244 of 15,000 SignaturesCreated by Paul Hogarth

Signature needed: The Christie scandal you don't know about yetGov. Chris Christie has unilaterally passed a regulation that blocks automakers from directly selling to consumers in New Jersey, requiring them to go through third-party car dealers instead. As a direct result, Tesla—the electric car company that reduces our dependence on fossil fuels—must now close its two dealerships in the state. New Jersey is the third state to kick out Tesla that way, the other two being Arizona and Texas. It is an intentional move on the part of Republican politicians to kill the electric car. Sign the petition denouncing Gov. Christie for killing the electric car in New Jersey.282 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Paul Hogarth

Sign the petition: Reject and denounce any pardon of Sheriff ArpaioTrump led a horrifying, racist rally in Arizona—where he defended convicted criminal (and former Sheriff) Joe Arpaio for “doing his job.” Arpaio was convicted for violating a federal judge’s order to stop racially profiling Latinx communities and terrorizing undocumented immigrants. This is not "doing his job." The White House has allegedly prepared talking points on Trump’s soon-to-come presidential pardon of Arpaio. Trump’s plan to pardon Arpaio is a blatant demonstration of white supremacy and will only further harm families by endorsing policies that terrorize Latinx communities. Further, by pardoning Arpaio, Trump also says it’s okay to violate court orders. Only 21% of Arizonans support pardoning Arpaio. If the state’s Republican governor and two senators don’t publicly denounce Trump’s bigotry and reject this pardon, they are siding with the racists in their state. Sign our petition now to urge Arizona Governor Ducey and Senators McCain and Flake to publicly oppose Trump’s plan to pardon Joe Arpaio.72 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Paul Hogarth

Demand that Florida repeal its “stand your ground” lawA Florida jury has found George Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin—a 17-year-old African-American whose only crime was walking through a white neighborhood wearing a hoodie. The jury did not even find him guilty of manslaughter. While it did not play a role in this case, we will see more such injustices in the future as long as Florida has a "stand your ground" law on the books. Sign our petition to the Florida Legislature, demanding they repeal their “stand your ground” law immediately.12,145 of 15,000 SignaturesCreated by Chris Bowers

Sign the petition: Say no to court-packing in FloridaRepublican Gov. Rick Scott and the Tea Party state legislature have set their sights on the last vestige of sanity in Florida state government: The state Supreme Court. Last week, the Florida state Senate passed a bill that would change whether an incoming or outgoing governor can make appointments to the state Supreme Court. The bill may seem obscure since there won’t be any vacancies on the court until January 8, 2019 -- but that date is extremely important since it would be Rick Scott’s last day in office if he wins re-election this fall. This bill would allow Rick Scott to make three new Supreme Court appointments on his very last day in office, should he win re-election this fall. As if this wasn’t already a thinly-veiled power grab, the Republican state Senate forced the bill through on a party line vote just as Rick Scott pulled ahead in the polls for this fall’s gubernatorial election. Sign the petition: Don’t let Rick Scott pack the Florida Supreme Court.4,680 of 5,000 SignaturesCreated by Paul Hogarth

Sign the petition: Let Louisiana vote on Medicaid expansionLouisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is holding $16 billion in federal funds hostage, because he hates the Affordable Care Act. As a direct result, over 242,000 Louisiana residents are unable to get Medicaid—and are currently without health insurance. But we can let the people of Louisiana decide—63% of whom support Medicaid expansion. Senate Bill 96 would put Medicaid expansion on the November ballot. Sign the petition to the Louisiana state legislature: Let Louisiana vote on Medicaid expansion by voting “yes” on Senate Bill 96.232 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Paul Hogarth

Sign the petition: MoveOn is right—Louisiana should expand MedicaidMoveOn is putting pressure on Republicans who are blocking millions of low-income Americans from accessing quality health care by refusing to expand Medicaid. But Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal can’t stand the heat and the state is threatening legal action to stop MoveOn’s campaign. Last week, Louisiana Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne publicly demanded MoveOn take down a billboard that criticized Jindal for preventing 242,000 low-income Louisianans from accessing Medicaid as part of the Obamacare Medicaid expansion. Just days later, state officials threatened legal action again MoveOn. Sign the petition: Tell Bobby Jindal to expand Medicaid and stop the frivolous lawsuit threats.100 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Paul Hogarth

Signature needed: One clever thing can reverse all food stamp cuts in New JerseyWhen Congress slashed food stamps in February, 850,000 low-income families in 16 states plus D.C. stood to lose $90 of food assistance per month. But in a twist befitting the movies, there is still a way we can wipe out those cuts entirely. It's tricky to explain, but the bottom line is this: if a state were to increase its minimum monthly heating assistance benefit to $20 without kicking anyone out of the program, then no one in that state would face food stamp cuts. Three of the 16 states—New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania—have already done this. Executive orders by Govs. Andrew Cuomo, Dan Malloy and Tom Corbett increased the minimum heating assistance in their states to $20 a month, thereby preventing any food stamp cuts from taking place. Every state—including New Jersey—facing cuts can do this. Sign the petition demanding that Gov. Chris Christie increase heating assistance to low-income families as a means of restoring their food stamp benefits.96 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Paul Hogarth
