Tell Congress that tampons, pads and menstrual cups are not luxury products! The average woman spends 2,535 days on her period. That’s nearly seven years of her life of worrying if she has the necessary products to get through the day and trying to find a makeshift solution if she doesn’t. These “solutions” can lead to skipping work, school, or to severe health problems, like toxic shock syndrome. This is especially true for incarcerated women, where 80 percent have had to use a homemade tampon and 88 percent had to resort to leaking blood. While women spend a significant amount of money purchasing menstruation hygiene products each year—$2 billion to be exact—these essential goods are still inaccessible for many. There are currently no government assistance programs to help offset the cost. Menstrual hygiene products not only impact a woman’s health, but also her self-esteem, education, and economic empowerment. Yet for many, these essential products are not accessible. It’s time to fix that.303 of 400 SignaturesCreated by Elyssa

#EqualPay for U.S. Women's Soccer Team!Q: When do WORLD CHAMPS get paid far less than LOSERS? A: When they're women playing World Cup Soccer. That's right, the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team — which recently won the World Cup in a final that was the most watched soccer game in American TV history with approximately 23 million viewers — is paid far less than the men at nearly every level of competition, from playing "friendly” matches, to qualifying and playing in the World Cup. Now, several members of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team are taking action to level the playing and paying field by filing a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) because the U.S. Soccer Federation pays the reigning World Cup champions far less than their male counterparts. Equal pay matters on every field. Believe it or not, what happens on the sports playing field directly impacts corporate field. A new study found the correlation between women’s success on sports playing fields and success in the workplace is indisputable. "Girls who play sports have greater social and economic mobility, grow up healthy and confident, and perform better in school. In fact, 74% of executive women agreed that a background in sports can help accelerate a woman’s leadership and career potential.” - Fortune Magazine. Tell Congress that the Cost of Childcare Is a National Emergency!Childcare now costs more than public college in most states in our nation, leaving hundreds of thousands of people struggling to pay for high-quality childcare. But this fact is relatively unknown by our elected leaders. When there is no full-time stay-at-home caregiver in most American families because the adults need to bring home paychecks, this adds up to a national emergency – yes, A NATIONAL EMERGENCY! -- with dire consequences for our littlest learners and the national economy. In order to work, parents need safe, enriching places for their kids to be so they can work; and kids need high quality child care so they can thrive. Investing in early learning boosts our families and economy alike. Sign on to MomsRising message and this open letter, which we'll deliver to our Congressional leaders. ____________________________________________ Dear Member of Congress, Moms and kids can't wait any longer! Increased investments in affordable, high-quality childcare and early learning opportunities to ensure all children are ready and successful for school and life are needed now. Childcare now costs more than public college, making this a national emergency. It’s time to invest in early learning. Research tells us that the first 2,000 days build the critical foundation for a child's readiness to be successful in school and life. Leading economists agree, investments in high-quality early learning programs like preschool actually save future dollars for everyone. In fact, children who have high-quality early learning experiences are more likely to succeed in school, graduate from high school, gain stable employment, and are less likely to be arrested later in life. Studies show that for every dollar invested in high-quality early learning, we see a return of up to $7.00. Voters understand that it is important to spend now in order to save later. In fact 71% of voters (both Republican and Democrat) want to invest in early learning now to save future dollars. Sadly, quality childcare now costs more than college in our nation—and even though parents need safe, enriching places for children to be so they can work, too few options are available. It’s a national emergency. We can't afford to lose another day. Please support increased investments in high-quality early learning opportunities like preschool and childcare now.31 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Lauren Hipp

Fight Gun Violence. Tell the U.S. Senate to Pass Universal Background Checks Now!Atlanta. Boulder. Indianapolis. These have been just the high-profile mass shootings that grabbed national headlines over the last few weeks. In fact, the United States has averaged more than one mass shooting a day so far in 2021. And as the pandemic unfolded in 2020, gun violence rose dramatically with over 19,000 people killed in shootings and firearm-related incidents. Tragically, who is harmed by gun violence has often been determined by race, ethnicity, or gender. People of color -- and everyone -- deserve to be safe. While we mourn the recent shootings, we must also fight the explosive combination of guns, racism, misogyny, and white supremacy to reduce the likelihood of such tragedies recurring. The U.S. House has passed gun legislation to tighten background checks on gun sales, and now it’s up to the U.S. Senate to turn it into law. Tell the U.S. Senate to act against gun violence now and pass universal background checks.1,094 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Gloria, MomsRising

U.S. Senate: After Atlanta, fight racism and gun violence and pass universal background checks! The Atlanta mass shooting that resulted in the death of eight people -- six of whom were Asian American women -- again proves that Americans can no longer wait for action against gun violence and hate. In 2020 alone, as though the pandemic weren't already too much to bear, gun violence rose dramatically with over 19,000 people killed in shootings and firearm-related incidents. Tragically, who is harmed by gun violence has long been determined by race, ethnicity, or gender. Asian American women -- and everyone -- deserve to feel safe. While we mourn the Atlanta shootings, we must also fight the explosive combination of guns, racism, and misogyny to reduce the likelihood of such tragedies ever happening again. The U.S. House recently passed gun legislation to tighten up background checks on gun sales, and now it’s up to the U.S. Senate to turn it into law. Tell the U.S. Senate to act against gun violence now and pass universal background checks.251 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Gloria, MomsRising

Help immigrant families who fled violence and disaster!Congress needs to act before hard-working families have their lives torn apart. Taking away TPS status or letting it expire would throw hundreds of thousands of families into chaos as mothers and fathers lose their legal status to stay in the country. We could be forced to decide whether to divide our families or to take our children to dangerous and unfamiliar countries. TPS recipients are mothers, neighbors, caregivers, business owners and community members. We are parents to 273,000 children who have lived in the United States their whole lives and know no other home. Removing TPS recipients from the country is inhumane and makes no economic sense. It would cost employers nearly $1 billion in immediate turnover costs. It would cost our country an estimated $164 billion in gross domestic product over 10 years. It would destabilize housing markets. It would be especially devastating to fragile communities that are struggling to recover from hurricanes in Florida and Texas, where TPS recipients are on the frontlines of rebuilding communities. Please join me in asking Congress to keep the families of 273,000 children together by protecting TPS for 320,000 immigrants who currently have legal status in the U.S. because their countries are devastated by war and disaster.58,905 of 75,000 SignaturesCreated by Gabriela P.

Don't let the NRA choose our U.S. Surgeon GeneralEmboldened by its influence on Capitol Hill, the NRA is now flexing its muscles and actively working to derail Dr. Vivek Murthy’s nomination and confirmation to the position of U.S. Surgeon General. Why? Because, like many other doctors, he has in the past referred to gun violence as a threat to public health. Dr. Murthy is a Harvard- and Yale-educated doctor at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. His concern for gun safety is completely consistent with the consensus of medical and public health experts, and shared by such groups as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Public Health Association. Even C. Everett Koop, the legendary Surgeon General nominated by Ronald Reagan, described gun violence as a “public health emergency.” The NRA has no business meddling in who should be the United States’ foremost champion for public health issues. Tell the White House and the U.S. Senate to stand firm behind the nomination of Dr. Murthy for the position of U.S. Surgeon General and to move forward with his confirmation!85,762 of 100,000 SignaturesCreated by Gloria Pan

Pass emergency funding for Hurricane Harvey victims NOW!Our country was not prepared for Hurricane Harvey. With only $3.3 billion to spend, FEMA does not have nearly enough resources to cover rescue and recovery efforts in Houston and along the Gulf Coast. A report by CoreLogic estimates that Hurricane Harvey could cause $39.6 billion of damage of homes alone in its immediate path. A major infusion of federal funds is critically needed to bring in additional emergency response teams; begin cleanup efforts; repair damaged houses, schools, businesses, and infrastructure; provide aid to displaced families; help those who have lost their homes and livelihood; provide healthcare and nutrition assistance to those in need; and more. As Congress returns from August recess, top of the Republican agenda will be to pass a federal budget aimed at reducing the size of government by slashing government programs. In his own version of the budget, Donald Trump proposed major funding cuts for disaster relief. As we are seeing now with Hurricane Harvey, FEMA is central to relief efforts in this historic national disaster, demonstrating the unique role government plays in times of need, providing assistance and support, mitigating the effects of disaster for America families and communities. Sign on and tell the U.S. Congress to appropriate major emergency funding to help Hurricane Harvey victims NOW!!!907 of 1,000 SignaturesCreated by Gloria, MomsRising.org

Quick Action: Tell Subway to Ban the Open Carry of Firearms! As many of our local restaurants begin to reopen with new safety measures in place to protect us from COVID-19, our excitement is tempered by alarm as we see another threat to our safety re-emerge in some of those same restaurants: the threat of gun violence. No matter what we look like, where we live, or where we come from, we want to be safe and free from the threat of gun violence. On May 9th, a dozen protesters openly displayed weapons – including pistols, shotguns, and even what appeared to be an AT4 rocket launcher! – as they ordered food from a Subway restaurant in Raleigh, North Carolina. No one wants to feel scared as we begin to return to our favorite restaurants. Help us tell Subway CEO John Chidsey to ban the open carry of firearms in all Subway stores, and tell people to leave their guns at home!502 of 600 SignaturesCreated by Gloria, MomsRising

NO to cancer risk with makeup! The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics investigated L’Oreal products commonly found on store shelves, and found a shocking use of carcinogens in the mascaras, eyeliners and eye shadows. It also found cancer-causing chemicals in L’Oreal’s anti-aging creams, nail polish and hair products made by the company’s most iconic brands, Maybelline and Garnier. L’Oreal’s kids' products aren't free of potentially cancer-causing chemicals either! The investigation found DMDM hydantoin in L'Oreal Kids 2-in-1 shampoos, a chemical that releases formaldehyde to preserve the product. Formaldehyde has been designated as a carcinogen by many authoritative, scientific bodies, including the United States National Toxicology Program and the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Companies like Johnson & Johnson have already removed formaldehyde-releasing chemicals from its children's products, proving L’Oreal could and should be as well! Sign on now, and join the chorus of moms and family members telling L’Oreal that we want products – including cosmetics, anti-aging creams and baby shampoos – that don’t contain ingredients linked to cancer!336 of 400 SignaturesCreated by Gloria Pan
