Why is this important?
Mercy is embodied in human compassion; it cannot be earned as such, it must be given. Indeed, many laws have been codified over the years, influenced by the intellectual reasoning that, the punishment must fit the crime. Intellectually speaking, laws are affected, not only for punishment but, too, as a deterrent to discourage further criminal acts. However, it is also within our human capacity to feel compassion for another which compels our intellect to establish laws and codify them as the standard of human conduct.
