ABC: Fire Meghan McCain from The View!
Meghan McCain uses her platform to traffic in fearmongering lies and bigotry. Recently, she trivialized the deadly influence of right-wing nationalism on an act of anti-Semitic violence in the US by claiming that a Muslim Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar, somehow bore responsibility for the terrorist attack—despite the fact that the terrorist published a manifesto that cited right-wing conspiracy theories about Jews and Muslims alike. By obscuring the very real threat of anti-Semitic violence in order to attack a political opponent, Ms. McCain uses her platform in a manner that (1) prevents a great number of people from identifying and understanding the real source of anti-Semitic violence; and (2) puts Muslims at risk of undue retaliation. In a similar obscurantist vein, Ms. McCain referred to a cartoonist who posted a satirical comic of her as anti-Semitic—even though the cartoonist is Jewish man expressing his disgust at her shameless bad-faith exploitation of his identity in order to further her political narrative.
Why is this important?
The Anti-Defamation League reports that in 2018, virtually every extremist murder in the US was at the hands of right-wing extremists. To add to that growing crisis, the DHS recently disbanded its task force devoted to stamping out white nationalist terrorism. Those who use their public platform as a bully pulpit for mendacity and fearmongering, at a time when ethnic minorities are increasingly more likely to fall victim to hate crimes, should not be given airtime to spread lies that have the effect of inciting the wounds of right-wing nationalism from which this nation is trying desperately to heal.
