ACTION TO STOP CLEAR CUTTING PRACTICES ALONG 10,000 MILES OF GREAT LAKES BLUFFS

Petition for Protection of Great Lakes Bluffs and Wildlife Habitat

Great Lakes bluffs are not vacant land waiting for alteration. They are living ecological systems — layered landscapes that provide stability, biodiversity, migration corridors, nesting sites, and refuge for countless species.

When bluff cuts occur, the impact extends beyond soil movement and altered viewsheds. The inhabitants of these places — birds, pollinators, mammals, and countless unseen species — experience immediate disruption. Nesting grounds may be abandoned. Feeding patterns altered. Shelter removed.

We ask decision makers to consider not only the visible change to the land, but the unseen consequences: the sudden intrusion of machinery, the vibration, the fracture of familiar habitat, and the displacement of wildlife from places they have occupied across seasons and generations.

If reports of sensitive or protected species habitat are confirmed, including nesting areas, appropriate review and enforcement should occur under applicable environmental protections.

We call for stronger review and meaningful protections regarding bluff alteration activities — whether public, private, or commercial — recognizing that stewardship of Great Lakes ecosystems carries responsibilities beyond property boundaries.

These bluffs are not simply edges of land. They are homes.

Why is this important?

STEWARDSHIP:

If you can recognize the extraordinary value of protecting the sanctuary of an eagle and preserving habitat for species that depend upon it, then what greater responsibility exists than extending that same ethic of stewardship to the protection of our Great Lakes bluffs.

Stretching across thousands of miles of shoreline, these bluffs are more than scenic landscapes — they are living infrastructure. They stabilize shorelines, support ecological balance, influence nearshore water quality, provide refuge for wildlife and migratory birds, and contribute resilience in an era of increasing climate uncertainty.

We call upon Great Lakes organizations, environmental leaders, legislators, and members of Congress to advance stronger review standards and meaningful protections for bluff alteration and habitat disturbance throughout the Great Lakes region.
