Since arriving in Berlin in early May, the new U.S. Ambassador to Germany has acted more like an imperial commissar than a U.S. Ambassador. Richard Grenell bullies and lectures German organizations and institutions. In contempt of centuries of diplomatic tradition of political non-interference, Grenell has underscored he wants his work in Germany to empower right-wing political parties. One senior German politician recently noted Mr. Grenell has behaved more like “a far-right colonial officer” than a U.S. diplomat. Lacking neutrality while speaking of a third country, Grenell has called Austria's prime minister a "rock-star" of the right. Grenell told Breitbart media he's in touch with right-wing parties across Europe seeking his help and interference in their domestic elections. Mr. Grenell has said "I absolutely want to empower other conservatives throughout Europe, other leaders. I think there is a groundswell of conservative policies that are taking hold."
Enough already! Mr. Grenell, it's time for you to either behave like a U.S. Ambassador or take your political interference home. It doesn't matter what political parties you support in Washington; in Europe, your job is to represent America, not engage as a partisan in domestic European politics.
Why is this important?
As an American citizen residing in Germany I oppose America's senior diplomat in Berlin taking partisan positions in German politics, endorsing other European leaders or domestic partisan grounds, and stating that his mission in Germany is to "empower... conservatives throughout Europe.."
