Demand Hospitals Continue Providing Healthcare for All!
.jpg)
Attorneys General around the country should follow the lead of New York AG Letitia James in demanding that hospitals continue to provide care for transgender youth. Hospitals should not comply in advance with Trump's dangerous and illegal executive orders, should not discriminate, and should continue to serve their patients!
Why is this important?
A handful of hospitals, including NYU Langone, are suspending care for transgender youth out of fear of Trump's malicious, anti-science, politically-driven edicts. And others, such as New York-Presbyterian, are taking pediatric gender care off its website.
Care for transgender youth saves lives. Trump's executive orders endanger the health of our kids—inserting politicians into decisions that should be made between families and their doctors. And hospitals need to continue offering those services while Trump's executive orders are rightfully challenged in court.
This is part of a larger campaign to demonize and harm transgender youth, disempower their parents, and undermine health care. These go hand-in-hand with attacks on transgender folks in military services, teachers who seek to support all their students, doctors who provide essential care, and parental rights to make supportive, thoughtful, safe decisions for their children.
The New York Attorney General Letitia James has warned hospitals that New York State law requires that they serve without discrimination. And suit has been filed to stop Trump's dangerous EOs. In the meantime, there is no reason to suspend care.
More attorneys general need to step up, as has AG James, to insist hospital systems continue to provide life-saving care without discrimination and without choosing to comply in advance with dangerous and discriminatory EOs that are actively challenged in court.
