Avalon Green Dog Run

To the Management at Avalon Green:

We, the residents of Avalon Green in Elmsford, NY and the undersigned, would like to bring your attention to the urgent need for a community dog run.

The majority of residents in this community are pet - specifically, dog - owners, and one of the main attractions of Avalon is its advertised pet friendliness. The rents paid by Avalon residents are commensurate with upscale luxury rentals in notoriously high rental markets such as Manhattan, most of which offer onsite dog runs, petcare services, and community events. While we can understand that the recent pandemic has made dog-friendly events and the like difficult to organize, it is disappointing and dangerous that Avalon does not even have contiguous sidewalks that residents can enjoy without fear of their dogs (or children!) being hit by cars that routinely ignore the speed limit.

The current environment is not conducive to providing our dogs with the mental and physical stimulation they need to be healthy. The nature pathway presents serious tick-borne disease hazards during the warmer months, while the snowbanks during the winter render almost everything, including the dog waste areas, inaccessible. Green spaces that residents should be able to enjoy are overrun by coyotes and other wildlife, further exacerbating the problem. Public dog parks are inconvenient to access at best, and downright dangerous to expose our dogs to at worst. Fatal canine fights and attacks are commonplace in situations where dogs are unfamiliar with their companions and environment, and the risk of dogs getting lost in these scenarios is even greater.

Having a safe, enclosed dog run onsite would solve for all these issues without much effort. Space is abundant in the community and installing a dog run would currently require little more than adding fencing to cordon off an area. Another possibility is “converting” one of the Tot Lots into a dog run where the dogs within the community can play with their friends. The Tot Lot in the lower level, for example, is rarely-to-never used. All medical information and vaccination requirements for resident dogs are provided by residents upon move-in, lessening the administrative burden in this area.

There is an urgent need for a safe, enclosed dog run that could provide a much-needed outlet for our dogs to socialize and fulfill an important biological need, while also bringing the human community together post-pandemic. We trust that the Avalon Green management has the best interests of their four-legged residents at heart and that this request will be considered and addressed by August 31, 2021.

Sincerely,
The Residents at Avalon Green

Why is this important?

Every resident at Avalon Green, with or without a dog, has expressed support for a proper dog run in the community. We chose to move here in part because our dogs would be able to enjoy the space too, but this is not the case. We have the opportunity to make our current community more enjoyable and safer for our dogs so let's try!
