President Trump has already made clear his intentions to get rid of public education at every turn—including with his latest extreme proposal to completely eliminate the Department of Education (DOE).
We’re not going to stand by and allow Trump to starve students and teachers across the country of the funding and support they rely on through the Department of Education. Any dissolution of a federal agency requires approval from Congress. Demand members of Congress protect every students’ right to an education and block any attempts to abolish the Department of Education!
Why is this important?
Trump has made clear his intentions to completely dismantle public education, during his campaign stating, "One other thing I'll be doing very early in the administration is closing up the Department of Education in Washington D.C., and sending all education and education work and needs back to the states.”
The Department of Education plays an important role in protecting students from discrimination, advancing student achievement, granting financial aid, enhancing funding for nearly all public schools as state and local governments underfund public education, and working towards equity in education for all students, especially for low-income communities and students with disabilities. We need to increase federal funding for education—not completely gut the only federal institution committed to it.
And he won’t stop there. Project 2025 has an entire section focused on reshaping, or more accurately dismantling, our public education system and a plan to reroute public education funding to private education, through voucher programs. The plan not only includes eliminating the Department of Education but also getting rid of teachers unions and gutting any programs that support equity and inclusion, even free school lunch programs and Head Start.
Every student, no matter who they are or where they live, deserves to have a quality education. Urge Congress to affirm this value and protect education against attacks by the Trump administration!
