Branham Walkout
#stillwalkingout
Why is this important?
The walkout is a call to Congress to "pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship," according to Women's March Youth EMPOWER organizers.
The National School Walkout at 10 a.m. March 14 will last 17 minutes to honor the 17 students and staff members killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Valentine’s Day.
This is a national movement. We have the right to protest. This is CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE. We want to create change. You can too. Join us in the walkout.
Details: The walkout will be PEACEFUL. This means students will leave classrooms promptly at 10 am SILENTLY as to not disrupt the rest of the classroom. Then, students will proceed to the QUAD to stand in unity for 17 minutes to honor the lives that were lost. This will allow for a safe, nondisruptive, place to congregate and stand together. After this, we will return to class and continue with the rest of the school day.
Your rights as students walking out:
You will be given an unexcused absence upon leaving for more than 10 minutes; however, you have a right to freedom of speech and the school CANNOT reprimand you further for your exercise of civil disobedience/protest. (One unexcused absence does not affect you unless you were to get 4 more and then you will be put on social probation.)
If you would like to advocate for this issue further please join the Facebook page for San Jose March for Our Lives which will be held on March 24.
