Re-Open State Board of California Offices
We are part of the 650,000 licensed Cosmetologist’s and Barber’s within the State of California. We are not claiming to represent ALL 650,000, but we anticipate representing a large portion of them.
We will most likely be facing new mandates going back to our salon’s sometime in the near future. As of today, 4/20/2020, there is ZERO support and or factual guidelines for us to provide a clean, safe, and sanitized protocol based on the recent COVID19 pandemic.
We are asking that you please re-instate the offices of State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology of Consumer Affairs immediately due to the fact that they are the only source of safe regulations and mandates we have had and have reported to under our licensing since 1927.
We are specifically referring to the amount of confusion not having them as a resource is creating by only having "suggestions for when we re-open may look like" listed below, whether in a webinar, a podcast, or a social media post.
We are sharing our findings to reiterate how important State Board is during a Pandemic.
This list is just a broad "overview" of what is being discussed amongst people in our Industry based on "assumptions, questions, and or suggestions" from state to state.
We are not endorsing the list in any way.
• Gloves for professionals while cutting hair?
• Gloves to be worn by clients?
• Masks for clients (what type if any is acceptable?)
• Masks for professionals (Do we provide them for clients as well?)
• Disposable Aprons?
• Disposable Capes?
• Sanitization rules (Are there any additional outside of our current ones?)
• Storage of worn aprons and capes?
• Soiled worn receptacle at each station?
• Laundry “Communal” properties without towel service
• Hand Sanitizer ( Do we need to have clients apply upon arrival as Medical office’s do)
• 6 Feet of “Social Distance” for more than 10 people?
• 10 person gathering rule (Are we looking at maintaining this rule upon return?)
• Self Serve Beverage Service?
• Magazines (Are we no longer to provide reading material to clients?)

Why is this important?
Let us add, there is a severe shortage on sanitizer, Quats (Barbicide), gloves, wipes, and clipper disinfectant State to State.
If the sole purpose of the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology is to uphold us to strict rules, regulations, and sanitization practices, thus ensuring we are providing a safe and clean environment for our clients without spreading any infectious diseases, please justify your logic in shutting down the only resource holding us accountable during a pandemic! A first in our lifetime.
They offices should remain open, even if our Salons are closed. At the least, strategizing on how to ensure our safe return to our salons. Not being an accessible resource for us during this extremely difficult and uncertain time is proving to be very unhelpful and problematic as many of salon professionals are forced to come up with their own ideas as to what they think they will need to go back to work without any hard evidence other than a news source.
We expect nothing less than a collaborative effort between the CDC, the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology of Consumer Affairs, and the Health Department to establish clear and concise safety measures, cleaning and sanitization guidelines if they differ from the ones we are already implementing. Thus ensuring a safe return for us, our clients, our COMMUNITY, and to avoid any future risk of infection.
Anxious to return to work safely,
