It's time we stop honoring a racist traitor who led the fight to take up arms against our nation, in order to preserve the savage system of slavery. We still live with the terrible legacy of slavery, the ruthless and once-legal system of terror that represents America’s greatest shame. It’s outrageous that we still honor the man who led that horrible Confederacy effort, killing more Americans than all wars combined. It's time we change the name of Jefferson Davis Hwy in Stafford County, VA.
Why is this important?
As I drive south through Stafford County on I-95, just before the Garrisonville Road exit, I always see the huge sign that says “To Jefferson Davis Highway” and it just rattles me. What a way to welcome folks to the county. Why do we still have a primary highway in Stafford County that honors a racist traitor who led the fight to take up arms against our nation, in order to preserve the savage system of slavery? We still live with the terrible legacy of slavery, the ruthless and once-legal system of terror that represents America’s greatest shame. I was in Charlottesville on Aug. 12, 2017, peacefully protesting against the Neo-Nazis and the Unite the Right Rally. I experienced the hate personally and it needs to stop now. We live in a post-Charlottesville time. And the vast majority of Stafford County, VA, residents no longer want to honor the Confederacy atrocity or the racist legacy of Jefferson Davis. Change the name of the highway now!
