Chico State University rebranding re: logo erasure
[The Gender & Sexuality Equity Coalition (GSEC)] kindly refuses to embrace the administration’s decision to rebrand the university campus. As stated by University Communications, “A shared, singular identity will benefit everyone,” which unambiguously contradicts the university’s claim of “valuing diversity.” Without negating the bureaucratic politics of distributing funds, there are real pressing issues that are directly impacting the livelihood of students: issues such as food security, housing, mental health resources, and academic advising that must precede a logo swap.
It’s evident that Chico State’s priority is to maintain a façade of progress and inclusion by purporting a “Do & Dare” campaign rather than securing the practical needs of students. Replacing our custom logo with a generic logo does not “create a unified visual association with our exceptional academics and research, vibrant campus culture, and Wildcat spirit.” On the contrary, it is erasure of the proclaimed vibrant campus culture, erasure of what symbolizes our representation and the hard work that’s been accomplished over the years. Particularly with the GSEC, it is erasure of fifty years of student-led activism.
What happened to individualism?
A core pillar of American democracy.
We ask the university to respect the voices of [students].
We ask the university to retract their decision to apply the same logo across the board

Why is this important?
Part of the human condition and experience is about solidifying our existence through art, symbolism, and imagery.
