Create Pedestrian Plaza on Roosevelt Between Main & Union in Flushing, NY
We the people of New York City demand that basic needs of safety and convenience be met in one of the busiest streets in the city. Roosevelt Avenue between Main Street & Union Street in Flushing Queens needs to be shut down to vehicular traffic and replaced with a permanent pedestrian plaza. There are too many people who utilize this street on a daily basis. The sidewalks are too narrow to accommodate all the pedestrians who use this street. Cars should not have exclusive rights to a vast majority of our public space, which they do right now. Walking is accessible to everyone while driving is not. Walkers, bikers, and those using public transit far outnumber those using cars and should be given preference to public space access. With such limited space in Flushing, and with climate change getting worse and worse, we need to do what we can to ensure a cleaner planet, cleaner streets, safer communities, and a more pedestrian friendly atmosphere. Bikes and pedestrians should have preference over cars. Roosevelt Avenue between Main & Union need to be given back to the people for their safety, convenience, recreation, and enjoyment. Small businesses in the area will benefit greatly from increased walkability.
Why is this important?
I was a witness to the immediate aftermath of a horrible car accident on Roosevelt Avenue on Jan 2, 2019. A black Lincoln was on top of a woman.
Traffic fatalities/injuries are too high, our carbon footprint is through the roof, and pedestrian rights are being trampled by ever increasing car traffic levels. It's time we take back the streets for public enjoyment by the many and to encourage more people to walk/bike/take public transit.
