Defund Princeton Police Department
Excluding the public school system, the police budget greatly exceeds the budget of all other community services combined. We want defunding and reallocation of those funds to affordable housing, drug counseling, and paid on-call social workers. We want to tackle the true root causes of issues in our town, treating the sources and symptoms behind them through building stronger community resources.
Why is this important?
Princeton is already a place with an extremely low violent crime rate. Currently our police department is overfunded considering that most issues they are called to solve would be better handled by specialists in other areas. Most situations within Princeton involving police could without a doubt be handled by a combination of unarmed social workers, unarmed city employees and drug rehabilitation specialists.
