Demand 42 refineries convert the deadly chemicals, HF and MHF, to a safer alternative.
Hydrofluoric Acid/ Modified Hydrofluoric Acid/(HF/MHF) is a highly toxic and lethal chemical used to make high-octane gasoline. Refineries store the chemical in bulk in large tanks on site. The chemical is transported to the sites in trucks.
A release of HF/MHF from an accident, natural disaster, or intentional act of terrorism would result in severe health effects and deaths. When released into the air, MHF/HF creates a toxic ground-hugging cloud that moves with the airflow. It will impair organs and body tissue, even causing death or life long organ damage to those affected within a wide radius of the site in direct line with the airflow at the time of the accident. See the link of a release test: https://traa.blog/2020/03/22/1986-hydrofluoric-acid-release-test/
There are presently 42 facilities in the US still using this lethally toxic chemical located mostly in densely populated and under-resourced communities. Two facilities that have not converted to a safer alternative are in the densely populated Los Angeles area. Some of other refineries are in Illinois, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin. Honeywell claims to be the world’s largest producer of HF.

Please sign this petition and demand the EPA and President Biden replace this lethally toxic chemical with the much safer alternatives other refineries are using today.

Why is this important?
Hydrofluoric acid is one of the most dangerous chemicals used by industry and ranks as one of the most toxic chemicals that might likely be targeted for intentional release by terrorists using explosives.
19,000,000 people live within the lethal-risk area of the 42 refineries still using and transporting HF. These refineries are located throughout the United States.
HF is extremely harmful through any route of exposure. A large release of HF would kill thousands, impact hospitals and threaten national security. Accidents and deaths have occurred from contact with HF. Victims have died or have damaged organs by just a splash of HF. Cities have been evacuated because of HF leaks. HF is shipped in trucks, trains and ships.
A regulation requiring refineries to convert from HF to one of the much safer, modern alternatives would eliminate the hazards posed by the threat of an accident within the refinery and daily highway transport of massive amounts of HF to refineries. We are all affected by the refineries and the transportation of HF.
Let's change this and require the remaining 42 refineries to convert to these safer alternatives.
