Sign to reject the anti-trans book ban in Greenville County and across the country
The Greenville County Library Board has decided to move books with transgender themes from the children’s section to a limited, hard-to-find “Parenting and Early Childhood” section. This is a deliberate act of censorship that not only restricts access to important stories but also marginalizes and erases the experiences of transgender youth. We must take action now to reverse this harmful decision and ensure that all children can see themselves represented in their public libraries!
Why is this important?
Public libraries should be spaces where all voices are heard, where diversity is celebrated, and where every child can find books that reflect their lives and experiences. By hiding these books away, you are not protecting children—you are silencing them. You are denying countless young readers the chance to see themselves reflected in the stories they read, and you are isolating them at a time when they need to know they are not alone.
This decision is not only harmful—it is discriminatory. It suggests that books featuring transgender characters or themes are somehow inappropriate or “less than” other children’s books. It perpetuates a stigma that is not only unfounded but deeply damaging to children who are already navigating a world that too often refuses to accept them for who they are.
We refuse to let this act of censorship go unchallenged. We demand that the Greenville County Library Board immediately reverse the decision to move books with transgender themes out of the children’s section and commit to transparency and inclusivity by ensuring that books representing all identities, including transgender and LGBTQ+ identities, remain accessible in the children’s section where they belong, and involve the community in decisions that impact how books are categorized and displayed, ensuring that all perspectives are considered and respected.
