We're calling on the Nassau County Bus Transit Committee and Transit Accessibly Transportation Community to reschedule and relocate both NICE Bus Fixed-Route and Able-Ride Public Hearings at their depots in Garden City. They're currently scheduled for 4pm and 10am respectably.
Both depots--the NICE Bus/Mitchel Field Depot and Able-Ride Depot--are inaccessible because they are only served by one bus route.
Both depots are within walking distance, but it is not easy to cross Roosevelt Field Mall because of speeding cars, which makes it difficult for wheelchair passengers, walkers, and blind folk to attend this inaccessible public hearing.
We're calling on both transit committees to relocate the public hearing to a more accessible area like renting spaces at hotels, churches, public schools, Roosevelt Field Mall, Walt Whitman Mall, Sunrise Mall, Nassau County Legislator Building, Nassau orSuffolk County Libraries, Long Beach, Queens Public at Flushing, or Far Rockaway or Jamaica-Central Library, and to change the time to 6 to 8pm instead.
Why is this important?
The NICE Bus public hearing is very inaccessible for working families and students attending their schools at the time of public hearing. Most of other transit public hearings spread out in various location and start around 5pm and end around 8-9pm.
