Any issues that happen in this country- the buck stops at the Supreme Court, from surveillance to torture, to the Presidency itself- Bush v Gore, are strongly affected by the courts. We'd had a conservative court for decades, then Bush v Gore continued the conservative lifecycle, and McConnell took on the role of Senate and President, refusing to schedule hearings because he knew Obama's nominees would be confirmed, and the process of the democratic republic would be fulfilled.
