Don’t Silence Doctors from Speaking Out on Patients’ Suffering as a Result of Abortion Bans

Many hospitals have prevented their doctors from publicizing the increase in harm and suffering inflicted on patients due to the abortion restrictions instituted after Roe v. Wade was overturned, CNN has reported. Some medical staff have been forced to stay silent about the horrible health impacts of abortion bans even though the hospitals who employ them are located in states where abortions are allowed. Such censorship must stop—doctors and hospitals have a moral and healthcare responsibility to educate the public and warn of abortion bans’ heartbreaking and dangerous effect on patients.

Sign this petition calling on hospitals and universities with medical schools to stop silencing their staff and spread the knowledge of how abortion bans harm and endanger patients as much as possible.

Why is this important?

The net effect of such practices is to make medical staff fear for their jobs and careers and intimidate them into silence, so as to hide the tremendous suffering, health damage, and heartbreak that abortion bans are inflicting on people.

The CNN report describes the many ways hospitals and university medical centers use to silence doctors and medical staff and downplay the suffering caused by abortion bans. Some hospitals block or hinder media requests to interview their doctors and researchers on the topic. Others police social media posts about abortion—a university medical center’s lawyer insisted a group of residents in obstetrics and gynecology take down their Instagram post that said, “Abortion is healthcare,” even though many medical professional groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have used the exact same phrase.

Even when hospitals have allowed their doctors to speak publicly, these employers insist that the physicians do not disclose where they work and make clear they would prefer that the doctors not speak at all.

Will you support doctors speaking up for reproductive health and justice by signing the petition now?
