To: Donald Trump, President-elect
Donald Trump must denounce violence
Donald Trump has declared that he wants to be the president of "All Americans." We call on him therefore publicly and unambiguously to denounce all acts of sexual, racial, anti-Muslim, and anti-immigrant harassment, bullying, and violence, especially those committed by persons claiming to be his supporters. We further demand that, as president-elect of the United States, he promise, and direct his attorney general to carry out, swift and thorough investigations and prosecutions of all hate crimes and violations of human and civil rights, not least those committed by persons claiming to be his supporters.
Why is this important?
Since Election Night, incidents of harassment and assault against women, gays, Muslims, and people of color have increased, often accompanied by acclamation of Trump or threats that now that Trump is elected, targeted groups should "leave." Trump has stoked this violence with his own campaign rhetoric. As president, he must act decisively to counter this violence and to prosecute its perpetrators.
