Don't Defund Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood gets 40% of its money from the federal government. None of this money is used for abortions. Abortions make up only 3% of Planned Parenthood's activities. Planned Parenthood mostly helps poor women with women's health issues from STD's to cancer screenings to contraception. Defunding Planned Parenthood would close it down and make these health care services unavailable to poor women. President Nixon signed into law the donation of federal money to Planned Parenthood. Why do Republicans now want to strip Planned Parenthood of this money?

Why is this important?

I used Planned Parenthood when I was in college and grad school and had no insurance and was very poor. I used many of their services including contraception, check-ups, and one abortion. Without Planned Parenthood poor women would have nowhere to go for these services. I don't see why the federal government doesn't want to defund Planned Parenthood, since federal funds are not used for abortion and that seems to be what people who support defunding Planned Parenthood are worried about.
