To: The Utah State House, The Utah State Senate, and Governor Gary R. Herbert

Don't move the Utah State Prison. It's a waste of taxpayer money.

The Utah legislators want to move the Utah State Prison from Draper so they can sell and develop the land it is sitting on for the economic benefit of the State of Utah and the city of Draper. The Prison Relocation Committee wants to move the prison into another growing and developing community, stifling its growth and hurting its economy. It is estimated to cost almost A BILLION DOLLARS to relocate and rebuild another prison elsewhere. Tell your legislators you don't want the prison moved just for the benefit of one city. Especially at the expense of taxpayers and another developing city.

Why is this important?

I felt ambivalent about the Prison being built somewhere else, until they decided they want to build it within a half a mile from my house. I started researching the reasons and the cost of moving the prison. It is so expensive to rebuild the prison elsewhere, and lawmakers don't have a good understanding of the economic development of other cities. Draper is the only city that will benefit from the prison moving locations. Taxpayers will NOT recoup the cost of moving the prison by the tax revenue that could potentially come from the Draper land. Also, the cities that could potentially get the prison do not want it and do not choose it. The city of Draper chose to have the prison in their community.
