While proclaiming to be a champion of small government and family values, Senator Steve Daines has abandoned both principles for fealty to Donald Trump, favoring his approach of boosting large agribusinesses, multinational corporations, and the fossil fuel giants. Steve Daines has forgotten Montana.
Not former Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer though, who is a champion of working people. This is someone who counts Paul Wellstone as his political icon, backed single-payer healthcare and Canada-imported drugs, went full on for early childhood education, bashed the NAFTA and Walmart status quo, advocated for Iraq War veterans, increased community college funding, supported renewable energy and Native American tribal rights, and opposed the Citizens United ruling.

In 2000, he almost unseated Conrad Burns in a race for Senate, even as Al Gore was trounced statewide. While George W. Bush won Montana by 20 points again in 2004, Schweitzer won his campaign for Governor by 4 points. 4 years later, he trounced his Republican opponent with more than 60% of the vote. It is in no small part that many people wanted him to run for Senate in 2014 (he declined to do so then).
