Gabbi’s Law: Make Firearm storage MANDATORY in Alabama

Petition to Pass Gabbi’s Law in Alabama

Protect Alabama’s Children from Preventable Gun Deaths

We, the undersigned, urge the Alabama Legislature to pass Gabbi’s Law, a bill that would require all firearms in the state to be securely stored in a locked safe or lockbox and equipped with a gun lock when not in use.

This law is named in honor of Gabriella (“Gabbi”), a child who tragically took her own life using an unsecured firearm in her home—an entirely preventable loss.

Why We Need Gabbi’s Law:

  • Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in Alabama.
  • 85% of youth firearm suicides involve a gun belonging to a parent or relative.
  • Safe storage laws significantly reduce the risk of suicide, accidents, and school shootings.
  • Alabama currently has no law requiring guns to be locked or secured in the home.

What Gabbi’s Law Would Do:

  • Require that all firearms in the home be kept in a locked safe, lockbox, or similar secure storage.
  • Require that guns be stored with a trigger lock or gun lock when not in active use.
  • Impose criminal penalties on adults who fail to secure their firearms and allow access to minors.
  • Specifically impose felony charges if a minor dies by suicide using an unsecured firearm.
  • Promote public awareness and provide access to free or affordable gun locks.

Why is this important?

Our Message to Lawmakers:

We believe in responsible gun ownership and in protecting our children. Gabbi’s death, and many others like hers, should never have happened.

We call on our elected officials to act now and pass Gabbi’s Law to ensure no other family endures the pain of losing a child to a preventable tragedy.

Let’s save lives through accountability, awareness, and compassion.
