General Fund Accounting

Since 1969, Social Security and Medicare Trust Fund monies have been included in the accounting of the General Fund. These monies are separate and were set up for single purpose use, and should be accounted for separately. They are not part of a slush fund to be accessed at the will of Congress and /or the President.

Why is this important?

Trust Fund accounts such as Medicare and Social Security, should not be included in the accounting of the General Fund.
