Gov. Abbott: Call Special Session of Texas Legislature now.
Gov. Abbott: The tragedy of the mass shooting and murder at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde starkly shows the urgent need for common sense safety measures that polls show are supported by a large majority of Texans. Please exercise your power to call the Legislature into Special Session to take up the following safety measures:
• Raise the age at which an assault-style weapon can be legally purchased from the present 18 to 21 years of age.
• Enact red flag laws that allow guns to be temporarily removed from individuals exhibiting threatening or violent behavior.
• Repeal the law enacted in 2021 that allows guns to be legally stored in vehicles on school property and parking lots.
Most of the mass murders at schools have been carried out by young men under the age of 21. Increasing the age for legal purchase of high-powered rapid fire weapons will stop or greatly reduce the killing of our now vulnerable school children.
Please listen to the voices of Texans, including many elected legislators, and call a Special Session before school starts again in August.

Why is this important?
At a moment when the entire nation is grieving the massacre in Uvalde, we demand meaningful safety measures that have proven they work in other states. Americans want common sense safety measures, and that includes many gun owners. Act now.
