Gov. Herbert: Expand Medicaid for Un- and Underinsured Working Utahns
Gov. Herbert, please opt into the Expanded Medicaid Program for Utah. Accepting the $440 million Medicaid expansion money gives more than 123,000 Utahns insurance to pay their medical bills.
Why is this important?
I am self-employed and have had health issues. I know what it's like to forego medical help because I don't have adequate insurance. My experience gives me compassion for those in greater need.
Gov. Herbert, you said the cost of expanding Medicaid in Utah is "a wash." At no cost to Utah, Medicaid can be expanded to the 123,000 in need. If you don't accept the $440 million earmarked to Utah for Medicaid expansion, the money will be distributed among neighboring states. Republican governors from New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada have already chosen to expand Medicaid in their states.
This humanitarian action will cost Utah taxpayers NOTHING through 2017. Thereafter, the federal government will always reimburse 90% or more of the cost. If you fear the federal government won't continue to pay for expanded Medicaid, add a 'opt out' language to your bill.
It's simple and the choice is clear: give needed medical coverage to 123,000 Utahns at no cost to Utah or send our share of the money to other states.
Thank you for listening and I sincerely ask that you expand Medicaid coverage as soon as possible.
