Never, on its 500 years of history, Puerto Ricans had a chance to FREELY elect its government. Always had been under the rule of Spain first and the US later. Until us, Puerto Ricans, don't exercise freedom of choice without external influences, we can't claim that the free will of the people was expressed.
Give sovereignty to Puerto Rico and if the people FREELY elect to become a state or to be independent, then the US can respond.
We are the oldest colony in the world and while the US claims to be the leader of freedom, 5 of our freedom fighters rot in jail and the island has turned into a bridge of drugs and arms from and to the US.
Why is this important?
Puerto Ricans had never had the freedom from external forces to chose our path in the world.
