IAPMC Petition for A Nuclear Weapons Free Middle East

As political developments, insecurity and other sources of tensions in the area of the Middle East, including the issue of Iran’s nuclear program continue to threaten peace and stability not only in the Middle East but also in the world at large,

We the undersigned

1. Declare our support for resolutions adopted by the United Nations General Assembly over the past three decades calling for the establishment of a Nuclear Weapons Free Zone in the region of the Middle East;

2. Declare also our support for the decision taken in 2010 by the State Parties to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) for the holding of Conference in 2012 on the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction; a conference now expected to be held in Helsinki, Finland in December 2012;

3. Commend the Facilitator of the Conference, Under-Secretary of State of Finland, Jaakko Laajava, for his extensive consultations with all concerned;

4. Call on all countries in the region of the Middle East, as well as Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States in their capacities (together with the Secretary-General of the United Nations) as conveners of the Helsinki Conference, to work actively with the Facilitator and ensure that the Conference is held before the end of 2012.

This is the only logical solution that can reduce tensions, remove the need for sanctions and war, and help bring about a lasting peace in the region.

Signed:

Why is this important?

The US large military presence in the Middle East, threats of invasion and sanctions against Iran over the claim that Iran is building “nuclear weapons.” is exacerbating an already tense and volatile situation. These add to the fires burning in the Middle East, a real threat of another Middle East war with wide spread repercussions.

Peace loving people must speak out. We are calling for support of the Conference to be convened by the Secretary-General of the United Nations together with Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, in Helsinki, Finland in December, 2012, to be attended by all states in the region of the Middle East, to consider the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction.

The establishment of such a zone would be based on legally-binding agreements freely concluded by all States of the region and with the full support and engagement of the nuclear-weapon States. The objective is to ensure that ALL the countries in the region agree to rid the region of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems.

This is a logical solution rooted in both history and the anti-nuclear weapon experience.

We urge you to sign our petition.

Yours in Peace,
