ICE Out of Schools! ¡Fuera ICE de las escuelas!
On August 19th, the Franklin Pierce School Board will vote on whether to renew their contract with the Pierce County Sheriff. We say: No more ICE in our schools. Invest in students, teachers, and families, not surveillance.
We demand the school board cancel the contract with the sheriff now!
We demand the school board cancel the contract with the sheriff now!
Why is this important?
The Pierce County Sheriff, Keith Swank, has publicly declared that he is going to collaborate with ICE, going directly against Washington state and Pierce County law. Despite this, he holds contracts with school districts like Franklin Pierce, giving ICE access to our schools, families, and students.
This has already created conditions that allow ICE to show up in the community, at schools, and even detain individuals. Although Franklin Pierce School District policy claims they won’t collaborate with ICE, the contract with the Sheriff’s allows Student Resource Officers (SROs) do exactly that with zero transparency and accountability.
While the school district slashes essential programs, lays off educators, and drains resources from classrooms, it’s pouring $341,920 into a contract for two school police officers.
Families are living in fear. Educators and parents are outraged. We won’t stand by any longer.
Stand with us. Sign the petition and fight back!
