We are calling on the City of New York to declare a HEALTH crisis, and impose an immediate moratorium on all large-scale housing construction projects in Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill and the adjacent waterfront area until a full-service hospital is included in the plans. It is simply irresponsible and unsustainable to add tens of thousands of new residents to the area without it. It would be a self-inflicted health crisis. The Long Island College Hospital campus buildings are all still standing and can be re-utilized, or we can seek a developer who will submit proposals for a new state of the art facility, as part of an overall development plan. But we will not allow our area to be over-developed without adequate medical facilities. We appreciated Mayor Deblasio's willingness to address this issue during his campaign. Now, it's time for him and our city leaders to Walk The Walk and take action. "No Hospital? No Deal!"
Why is this important?
I live in a neighborhood near Long Island College Hospital. It was the best of the 3 in this area (the other 2 now suffering from overcrowding since its closure). It is literally a matter of life and death as I, and many other residents in the area, get older. And with the necessary health maintenance concerns that come with aging, to lose such a facility as the neighborhood population is exploding could be catastrophic. I do not accept any declarations of a "Done Deal". We can still reverse this situation before it's too late.
