Improve Dormitory Conditions at UMES
Issue 1 - Multiple dorms at UMES have mold, both in the rooms and in the vents and community bathrooms. This is causing students to get sick and will only get worse as time goes on.
Solution 1 -PROPER mold remediation needs to happen to ensure the safety of the students residing in these dorms. Remediation cannot happen when students' items are laying about and have spores fall on them and spread the mold further. Place industrial dehumidifiers in all community bathrooms.
Issue 2 - Kitchens in dorms are not operable. The dorms are advertised to students and parents with a kitchen on premises. Some students with dietary restrictions need access to these kitchens and do not have them.
Solution 2 - Over Winter break get all the dormitory kitchens fully operational.
Issue 3 - Water on floors of community bathrooms. Need water proof shoes to walk in the bathroom. It's a safety issue for slipping and for the spread of bacteria and mold.
Solution 3 - Have regular maintenance on drains and unclogging them. Also, ensure twice a day cleaning is happening in the community bathrooms and monitor bathrooms.
Issue 4 - Community bathrooms are not being cleaned twice a day like stated. Many issues could be monitored and gotten ahead of if this procedure was taking place.
Solution 4 - Enforce this. Once again, this was what was told to students and parents before attending UMES.
Issue 5 - Heat is too high in some dorms and too low in others. This is causing issues with student's allergies and asthma, and causing mold to grow more.
Solution 5 - Turn the heat to a reasonable temperature like 72 degrees C.
Issue 6 - No hot water or water pressure in community bathrooms. Students are having a hard time washing their hair due to the lack of water pressure. Students are having a hard time taking showers as the water is always cold. Some are resorting to going to friends' places to shower.
Solution 6 - Have the water heater and pumps assessed and maintained.

Why is this important?
Our students' health and well being are at stake here. We need UMES, Resident Life, to give our students what they pay for, what the school advertises, and a safe environment to live in.
