It is not acceptable -- in Seattle, or in any community -- for media and civic organizations to feature only male experts in news articles and on panels about public life. The undersigned will not organize or knowingly participate in excluding women experts in these ways -- and we call on those who do to end this senseless and sexist practice.
Why is this important?
Our community has a wealth of diverse experts on public life, but (Caucasian) men continue to dominate news coverage and public panels. Younger women and people of color need and deserve visible leaders who represent their experiences in our community to inspire them to step up and lead. And we all benefit when more perspectives are included in the shaping of public opinion about the issues and politics in our community.
