The City of Chicago has a three-second yellow light at lighted intersections. Three seconds is not enough time for safety concerns when cars are traveling to meet the "yellow clearance interval." This is the theoretical minimum amount of time needed for an automobile to clear the far side of the intersection from a given distance away, or come to a safe stop. This is calculated by adding three variables: (1) driver's reaction time, (2) stopping time and (3) time needed to clear the intersection. Increasing all yellow lights to six seconds will increase traffic safety and reduce traffic accidents.
Why is this important?
Increase the yellow light time at all Chicago intersections to a minimum of six (6) seconds to assure greater traffic safety and reduce traffic accidents.
