Integrate Schools. End the SHSAT

Admission to the specialized high schools by a single test greatly contributes to segregation and education inequity in New York City. End the NY State law that requires use of the Specialized High School Exam.

Why is this important?

New York has the most segregated schools in the US. NYC is the only district in the nation with high schools that use a single test to determine admission. Integrated schools are best for all children. It's now sixty-five years after Brown v. Board of Ed. We should no longer support school segregation.

Reasons for signing

  • I am a Stuyvesant Alumni, and I believe the continued exclusion of black and latinx students from Stuyvesant is hurting the school's reputation. It is also harmful to the school's majority Asian students that they are not exposed to students from other cultures.
  • I teach at CUNY and I see many students who are bright and talented and could have attended a specialized high school but for the fact that they attended an under-resourced high school and have parents that do not have the financial resources to afford tutoring and the test prep for the exam to get into the specialized high schools.
  • I'm a Stuyvesant graduate work in NYC public schools and hope these tests are thrown out for good
