Why is this important?
This petition is to change the Bartow County zoning ordinance to allow the right to reasonably keep backyard chickens on less than one acre in residentially zoned areas. Backyard chickens provide chemical-free pest control, consume all organic waste from the household, produce fresh wholesome food, and provide a sense of purpose and responsibility for young children.
**an example of what "reasonably kept" means: in neighboring counties/cities, the ordinance has been modified to allow up to three hens on less than one acre. No roosters. Shall be maintained within a covered enclosure and fenced area set back a minimum of ten (10) feet from all property lines and no less than twenty five (25) feet from any residential dwelling.
