Keep Kevin at Transy
Kevin Kwon has been working at Transy on a one year contract and had the opportunity to purse a Permanent position as an art professor. He wasn’t offered the position after undergoing a hiring process, and if he isn’t able to obtain a permanent job he could be deported to Korea and have to serve in the military. In addition, the art department along with Transy’s staff as a whole is lacking diversity. Kevin is valued among his students, and many are in favor of keeping his position at Transy. In addition, The Lexington Art community continuously displays favoritism towards white individuals and lacks diversity in its artist promotions. Transylvania continuously prides itself on creating a diverse academic community, but the actions of our administrators do not live up to this image.

Why is this important?
Kevin Kwon’s portfolio tells a story that many students can relate to, creating a sense of community for those that are underrepresented on our campus. His collections “Passport” and “The Book of Green and Blue” discuss the theme of ‘being an immigrant in the U.S. in the 21st Century and discuss issues such as place, cultural identity, and dysphoria by dissecting the Korean passport.’

Keeping Kevin at Transy will allow these students to feel more at home on our campus, and allow others to open their eyes to the experiences of others within Transy’s community. His role as a professor is important to many students, and supporting this cause will not only impact Kevin, but Transy as a whole.
